EXPO ‘Elizabeth Jane Campbell’ – The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh (UK) – 4-30 Avril 2014

Elizabeth graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2013 and this is her first showcase at The Scottish Gallery. She was recently awarded the Guild of Enamellers’ 2014 Bursary and the Scottish Incorporation of Goldsmiths Bursary by Edinburgh College of Art. Elizabeth is currently Artist in Residence at Glasgow School of Art.
Her creative process is informed by concepts of visual literacy. The dot, line, shape, direction and colour are all crucial factors as they act as a language for us to read and understand our surroundings.
Elizabeth is attracted to enamel because of its methodical process which allows her to achieve colour, pattern and texture in a formal and structured way. Her love of this technique has led her to explore alternative materials in her work not normally associated with enamelling such as the ceramic honeycomb. She uniquely uses this material as a carving block which enables Elizabeth to create tactile and sculptural forms enhanced by colourful enamels.

she explains that

« in 2011 …. I spent four months living and studying in Seoul as part of an exchange programme with Kookmin University. It was a great experience that influenced the way I approach the creation of my pieces …… I was inspired by the contrasting architecture of Seoul: its sombre modern buildings intertwined with the colourful and ancient wooden temples and palaces dotted around the city.
How did you translate that inspiration into your work?
« I decided to represent this contrast by juxtaposing different materials, shapes and colours. Like the buildings in Seoul, my pieces show the vulnerability of wood and metal when exposed to time and elements; the layers and colours that slowly transform with the passing of years. Simple in form, but rich in stories and complexities. » (DesignerJewellersGroup)

Natural HistrionicsKath Libbert Jewellery Gallery

Natural Histrionics

Artists:   Nel LinssenHyorim Lee —  Anja EichlerStephanie Hensle —  Konrad Laimer —  Jie SunDorit SchubertSusanne Elstner

An International Art Jewellery Exhibition Inspired by Nature.
Chinese artist Jie Sun presents his ‘Big Fish’ golden Koi Carp brooches which when worn appear to swim straight out of the body. South Korean Hyorim Lee fashions finely feathered necklaces from colourful layers of softly luxurious leather. From her collection ‘On Death and Beauty’ comes a Fantastical Mr Fox fur stole by German artist Stephanie Hensle, painstakingly constructed from thousands of etched brass segments – a tactile, glamorous sensory experience, Stephanie also crafts shimmering Butterfly brooches from paper-thin metals etched and tinted pastel colours, as delicate and light as gossamer wings.
Quail eggs are the medium of choice for Anja Eichler’s sensitive collection which uses the symbolism of a fragile egg to reflect on our human condition – falling, failing, repairing and rising up again, stronger for the experiences we have encountered and survived. ‘Out of the Ashes’ by Susanne Elstner is a collection of jewellery from charcoal and fine gold which also has a point to make. Of it she says “Miracles even occur on barren land. Therefore, at times something new and beautiful can grow out of a piece of burned wood.”
Konrad Laimer is inspired by the plants and animals of his Alpine environment, where he fashions elegant bangles, rings and brooches from the horns of Alpine goats and Chamois. Plant life inspires Dorit Schubert, who uses traditional German lace making techniques, reviving this dying craft, to create her delightful collection of floral jewellery – delicate transparent and light – though actually surprisingly robust! Finally Nel Linssen, award winning doyenne of art jewellery, presents her collection of snake like necklaces and bangles – superbly intricate folded paper constructions inspired by rhythms and structures in the botanical world.
And to rival the drama of nature visitors will be invited to choose their favourite piece from the exhibition and declaim their enthusiasm for it by taking part in our ‘Natural Histrionics’ video compilation, which will be screened during the show! If a little help is needed to get over stage fright – all who participate in the video project will also be entered into a draw to win a £100 KLJG voucher.

Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden ARE « TattyDevine« . They’ve been designing and making jewellery since 1999.

On June 2013, Rosie and Harriet (Tatty Devine designers) headed to Buckingham Palace in their finest Tatty Devine pieces to receive MBEs for Services to the Fashion Industry. Rosie and Harriet said, “Receiving our MBEs today is undoubtedly the proudest achievement of our careers to date. Just chilling outside Buckingham Palace… with this splendid fellow!

Harriet and Rosie first met on Chelsea School Of Art’s Fine Art degree course. We found some bags of leather samples on the street one night, and after graduation we made leather wrist cuffs to sell on London’s markets. We were soon selling out every week at Portobello and Spitalfields. Vogue shot our first collection for their Millennium issue, and with lots of hard work, luck and fun, we grew our business to where it is today.

This year (june 2013) we were incredibly honoured to be awarded MBEs for services to the fashion industry. We’re proud to represent British design around the world and, as Tatty Devine continues to grow we stick to our principles of keeping production in the UK. Above all, we’re always motivated by fun.

Le Bonheur de regarder un bijou de Jack Cunningham

Jack Cunningham

Jack Cunningham is an academic and contemporary studio jeweller whose particular interest is narrative jewellery, being that which tells a story or makes a statement through visual imagery.

Jack Cunningham trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee and is currently head of silversmithing and jewellery at Glasgow School of Art where he has taught since 1990.
« I am motivated by the construct of our relationship with family, place, people, of recollection and memory, life and death. I am also interested in the dialogue that is consequently established between the maker – the originator of the artefacts statement, the wearer – the vehicle by which the work is seen, and the viewer – the audience who thereafter engages with the work.
I work exclusively with the brooch form to explore these personal narrative themes, which are sourced during numerous visits to Japan and time spent in Glasgow and Paris. »
His work is held in a number of public collections including the National Museums of Scotland and the Musee des Arts Decoratif in Montreal. He has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad and was a shortlisted finalist for the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize 2000

« In most of my designs I aspire to evoke a feeling of nostalgia. I consciously work in a miniature scale, using a diverse range of materials in order to create attention so that the onlooker has to become more involved in the piece, hopefully sparking memory or thought as well as making them smile. »

oui, tout à fait ……………

Jack Cunningham - Fragments Brooch 2006 white metal, coral, readymadeJack Cunningham – Fragments Brooch 2006 white metal, coral, readymade

» The choice of materials in the pieces reflects an alchemical collage approach. Plastic and coral, biscuit tin and garnet; the found and the sought-after cohabit in many pieces where, most succesfully they show the validity of each person’s story as an ‘everything-except-the-obvious’ approach in order to put across a personal coherence, a revelation and a testimony, and ultimately a report on the highlights of the experience of cultural transplantation.  » (about the Narrative jewelryAnalysis of ‘Transplantation A sense of place and culture- British and Australian Narrative Jewellery’ – Samuel O’Hana – Manchester, Samuel O’Hana, 2012- Klimt02-forum)
