EXPO ‘Eccentri:city’ – Whitespace Gallery, Edinburgh (UK) – 13-26 Juill. 2012

« Eccentri:city »

Image

Eccentri:city will showcase a collection of collaborative, one-off jewellery inspired by the City of Edinburgh. The collection, which has never been seen before, will reveal the jewellers’ favourite places in and around the city and their personal responses to the different locations. Demonstrating originality and thoughtfulness their work promises to offer a unique glimpse of contemporary jewellery design emerging from Edinburgh today and as its name suggests Eccentri:city will be no ordinary show.

Among the 17 jewellers taking part is Rhona Hogg who uses aerial views, surface textures and what’s hidden under the microscope as inspiration for her beautifully urban creations;; whereas, Claire Pouget Wright’s designs playfully explore colour, texture and pattern through quirkily shaped squares of all sizes. All this and more will be available to enjoy and purchase for the duration of the exhibition.

DECOUVERTE : Lisa Catterson – from mushroom to jewel through paper

Lisa Catterson : « I am constantly attracted to repetition and layers within nature. My work focuses on the delicate layers of gills I find within mushrooms.
Growing my own mushrooms allowed me to document the different stages of the growth through photography and detailed linear drawings.
I use the soft delicate nature of handmade paper to convey the subtle beauty I find through my research. The lightweight quality of the paper allows me to build up many layers within my work, portraying the changing contours of the gills.
I have used a reduced colour palette to focus attention on the repeated layer forms. » (Glasgow School of Art Silversmithing and Jewellery BA (Hons), graduate portfolio)

FLOURISH exhibition - 'Wine Leaf' brooches by Akiko Kurihara in silver and glass cut from wine bottles‘Wine Leaf’ brooches by Akiko Kurihara in silver and glass cut from wine bottles

« Things are flourishing in the jewellery garden ….giant porcelain cabbage necklaces, cut glass ‘Wine Leaf’ brooches, overblown bright blue enamel blossom jewels…

With an international reputation for showcasing the best in radical contemporary jewellery, Kath Libbert Jewellery Gallery, based at Salts Mill since 1996, marks her sixteenth birthday with flair! Flourish exhibits a fantastical array of art jewellery selected from around the globe.

From Dutch artist Nina Sajet’s surreal transformation of cabbages and sprouts into fine porcelain neckpieces, to South Korean Seulgi Kwon’s marvellous delicately tinted intricate silicone organisms that come to life when touched and worn. Textile inspired Francisca Bauza from Germany and Mallorca presents vibrant enamelled floral necklaces whose folds in metal and crimped edges mimic material; Yu-Ping Lin from Taiwan creates playful Origami inspired textile brooches that mutate into bracelets and back again – like jewellery ‘Transformers’- they can be worn in a myriad of different ways!

Additionally 100 international jewellers involved with the gallery over the last sixteen years have been invited to each enter an exuberant celebratory ring into a flamboyant competition called FlourishRing! Visitors to the gallery will be able to vote for their favourite by trying it on and being photographed modelling it. These photos will then become part of a growing installation on the walls of the gallery. The FlourishRing that gets the most public votes during the exhibition will win £250.

The gallery has represented a host of fantastic jewellers over the years including many renowned award winning UK and international art jewellers for instance Jacqueline Mina, OBE who is a Jerwood Prize winner, Georg Dobler twice winner of the Herbert Hoffman Prize – the most prestigious international art jewellery award, Adam Paxon – winner of the Jerwood Prize and the Herbert Hoffman prize and Malcolm Morris who created the tiaras worn by Gwyneth Paltrow in ‘Shakespeare in Love’.

Kath Libbert, the gallery’s founder and curator says: ‘’We are honoured that these celebrities of the jewellery world are all going to be taking part in FlourishRing along with many new creative talents. I can’t wait to see what they each come up with!!”

Jasmin GILES : c’est la WAX …..

Classé dans : COUP DE COEUR,Grande-Bretagne (UK),Jasmin GILES (UK),organics,textile,VIDEO — bijoucontemporain @ 23:17

Jasmin Giles (UK) textile & wax jewelry

découverte au BIAD Birmingham Graduate show 2011, re-découverte récemment sur une vidéo, ses créations « giant & bold » m’enchantent toujours !

« I make large-scale jewellery pieces, combining knitted textiles and materials such as wax and glass. The pieces represent contemporary jewellery alternatives. »

« Jasmin graduated from Chelsea College of Art last year (2010) with a first class honours degree in Textiles… Her entire degree show sold out and she is now a recipient of the Crafts Council Hothouse programme as well as working freelance from her studio in Clapham.
Jasmin told me that each piece is unique and is a labour of love- she sees her work as wearable art. Not only does she create each put together the piece, but she also creates the constituent parts. She starts off by dying the woven threads that make up the foundation of her Spring/Summer collection (top) and works hot wax into delicate (and remarkably regular) droplets.
Her work is rich, dramatic, heavy. It is bold and intelligent. I imagine it being worn as a patterned statement against a pallete of greys and blacks. I wonder who would wear it- and where? Well I would. I would wear it somewhere spectacular, where it could be seen, admired and whispered about. She talks of being interested in how the wearer is transformed by jewellery- for the AW collection, the sea is an image that I can’t rid myself of when I look at her work- I see heavy seaweed, kelp, dark nights and deep depths- perhaps that is the thing about her work; it transforms the imagination of the wearer and the viewer. » (PatternLondon, sept.2011)

ECA 2012 Degree Show – New Designers, business design centre, London (UK) – 27-30 Juin 2012

at « New Designers », business design centre – (London, United Kingdom)

27-Jun-2012 – 30-Jun-2012

Welcome to the 2012 Degree ShowThis year’s event marks the end of the first academic year following the College’s merger with the University of Edinburgh.

Jewellery and Silversmithing are broad terms in contemporary craft encompassing materials and techniques beyond the traditional ones associated with these trades. Skills are still very much at the root of this department and when thoughtfully applied to explore the material, memory and meaning they enrich this special discipline.

Our objective is to design and create personal, individual pieces of work that push the boundaries of our subject creating heirlooms of design to enrich people’s lives. Our exhibitions typically include explore fine metalwork in precious and semi-precious metals alongside plastic, resin, textile, paper, stone and other natural materials.
