quoi de mieux pour célébrer PAQUES qu’une ‘accro’ au chocolat ?

« This body of work explores human interaction with objects, specifically the interaction of our lips with objects. While examining the psychological and sociological potency of chocolate in the pieces entitled Love Tokens, I became aware of the sensual power of our lips. This culminated in Chocolate, a collaborative interactive installation comprised of a series of impressions made in the gold foil wrappers of Ferrero Rocher chocolates. The impressions are of puckered lips or teeth. In its use of repetition, mass quantities of « faux » gold foil, reference to chocolate and to the mouth, the installation speaks of consumption, indulgence, passion, and consumerism. »

EXPO ‘Fault Lines’ – ‘Rare Device’ gallery, San Francisco (US) – 19 mars-2 mai 2010

Classé dans : Amy TAVERN (US),COUP DE COEUR,Exposition/Exhibition,GALERIES,USA — bijoucontemporain @ 17:27

San Francisco design store and gallery Rare Device is proud to present « Fault Lines », new work by Amy Tavern, Molly McGrath (Molly M Designs), Martha McQuade (Uniform Natural), and Carol Gilbert (Yorktown Road).

EXPO Fault Lines

« Fault Lines is the first show in the project space within Rare Device. Complementing the gallery space, this area has been created to allow designers to explore different concepts in design and craft. In Fault Lines, the four designers are concerned with formal explorations of ‘line’: a line in space that can be expanded to become planes and solids; lines formed by a cut, crack or scratch; timelines; a line in the sense of a body of work. They accomplish this by both resisting and working with their chosen media, which includes wood, metal and fiber. Inspirational photos, models and sketchbook samples will be presented alongside the work to illustrate how each designer arrives at the finished piece.
Jeweler Amy Tavern will be presenting ‘Line Drawings/Borderlines’. Amy says her work « is composed of simple lines and abstract shapes that I vary, combine, and layer to create new, interdependent and often interactive spaces and patterns. I strive for a visual interplay between elements, creating pieces in which positive and negative space are equally important. The compositions are inspired by aerial views, simple drawings, and my interest in arrangements and order. Through my use of formal elements, a minimal handling of materials, and gestural surface marks, I wish to convey subtle visual movement and quiet attention to detail. »
Amy received her BFA in Metal Design from the University of Washington in 2002. She also holds a BA in Arts Administration from the State University of New York College at Fredonia. Amy has taught jewelry classes at the Penland School of Crafts and the Pratt Fine Arts Center. She has exhibited at Sienna Gallery, Quirk Gallery, and Taboo Studio, among others. In 2009 she received several emerging artist honors including an American Craft Council Searchlight Artist award. Originally from upstate New York, Amy is currently a Resident Artist at the Penland School of Crafts.
Molly McGrath (US) of « Molly M Designs » is featuring her sustainable wood and textile jewelry and laser cut prints. Her latest work is explores textiles collected on her travels around the world. She is also experimenting with creating three-dimensional designs with a two-dimensional surface. The resulting designs are an eclectic mix of deco, Japanese, tropical, Scandinavian, and geometric styles.
She approaches the designs as she would approach an architectural model : experimenting with the concept, materials, and composition. The jewelry is inspired by pattern and form – a skyline, a bird in flight, a composition of branches, a snowflake, cracked concrete, botanical morphology, perspective, building geometries and optical illusions.
Martha McQuade (US), as « Uniform Natural », presents her Spring/Summer 2010 clothing and accessories collection SHIFT. Martha says, « Inspired by the occurence of change, SHIFT is both slow and sudden. Slowness and the marking of change over time, like striations inscribed by rock fragments in a glacier moving across the earth’s surface, allows contemplation and the appreciation of subtlety. Suddenness, like a fracture along a fault, brings attention to one point, if just for a moment. Although naturally drawn to the slow, the sudden helps us see that which is familiar in a new way. »
Carol Gilbert (US) of Yorktown Road, will be showing bags, scarves and pillows. » (Rare Device gallery)

EXPO ‘Charlotte Daffern : The Acid Housewife Collection’ -Luke & Eloy Gallery, Pittsburgh (USA) – 18 sept-30 oct 2010

Charlotte Daffern is a hybrid crafts practitioner based in Birmingham, UK. Since completing her jewellery and silversmithing MA at Birmingham’s School of Jewellery, she has continued to develop jewellery and costume under her own label. Recycled fabrics and findings are used wherever possible to create stuffed components for her designs. Pearls and ready-made objects are also re-used to create eccentric, wearable pieces.
Charlotte begins her design process by identifying visual symbols that can be transferred into cloth. These are deconstructed, repeated, multiplied and explored through scale and positioning on the body.
Her creations aim to invoke nostalgia of the childhood dressing up box. She hopes that when people wear her pieces their childlike sense of fun and freedom is renewed.

« My work is a multi-faceted and ambiguous realisation of my perception of culture and personal experiences.
The result is a range of creative objects that relate to questions of gender, fashion, sociology, culture and history.
I began by exploring concepts of ‘Britishness’ and its associated visual stereotypes.
My visual investigations correspond to the current nostalgia for 1950’s aesthetics, activities and traditional values.
Our current economic climate has seen the re-emergence of make do and mend through up-cycling, re-cycling and re-using.
Domestic crafts such as knitting, baking and burlesque dancing have made reappearance and are considered ‘trendy’.
Additional themes come from feminist debates in response to this resurgence and relate to issues surrounding the pursuit
of feminine fulfilment, gender role representation and experimentation.
I begin by identifying visual symbols that can be transferred into cloth to create figurative representations of the initial ideas.
The visual symbols are deconstructed, repeated, multiplied and explored through scale and positioning. Each element is intended to be a prototypical simulacrum and de-centred to cross reference contexts and explore the concepts.
I aim to present my understanding of the complexities of these ideas juxtaposed with preconceived stereotypes in an original creative format. » (Charlotte Daffern)
