EXPO ‘GOOD AS GOLD’ – Craft Alliance Center, St Louis (Missouri, USA) – 4 Avril-15 Juin 2014

« GOOD AS GOLD »

To commemorate Craft Alliance’s 50th Anniversary we present Good as Gold, an exhibition which celebrates the hue of gold. From the golden fleece of the Greeks, to the Golden Stool of the Ashanti tribe in Africa, to the legend of El Dorado, gold has seduced us from the beginning of time. It’s color and preciousness continue to be a source of inspiration for artists today.

EXPO ‘HANNAH HEDMAN: LOSS’ – Ornamentum gallery, Hudson, NY (US) – 6 Juill.-5 Aout 2013

 Hanna Hedman: Loss

Hahha Hedman 'loss'

« All around is beauty, but a lingering bleakness is pulling downward. » – Hanna Hedman
Hanna Hedman’s new group of jewellery merge from aesthetics of loss, personal inner darkness, imitated nature and talismanic objects.
Blossoming sentimental flowers that imitate still life paintings become preserved into metal. Desiccated leaves form a hand that wants to hold on to you or a mask to hide behind. The work represent a frozen moment of decay; a preserved dark beauty that derives from the struggle of good and evil. Light and darkness are contesting one another. The jewellery wants to be beautiful on one hand, but on the other hand haunting and not even jewellery at all.

Movement, articulation and a nod to the historical reference to a reoccurring unit: the link. Or better than a string of pearls!
The results are as varied and imaginative as the makers, some are vibrant, others elegant and restrained with simple coloured lines. The artists have explored the theme in gold, titanium, silver, aluminium, glass, wood, recycled signs, all with an over riding link of movement as they beautifully fit the body.

EXPO ‘CONTEXT’ – Rob Koudijs gallery, Amsterdam (NL) – 20 Avril-1er Mai 2013

KAREN PONTOPPIDAN : « CONTEXT » -  Rob Koudijs gallery -   From 20 April to 1 May 2013

The difference in status between the fine and the applied arts is a phenomenon that has kept Karen Pontoppidan busy for some time now.

KAREN PONTOPPIDAN: "CONTEXT" - Amsterdam - Rob Koudijs gallery - From 20 April to 1 May 2013 http://www.galerierobkoudijs.nl - - The difference in status between the fine and the applied arts is a phenomenon that has kept Karen Pontoppidan busy for some time now.

The difference in status between the fine and the applied arts is a phenomenon that has kept Karen Pontoppidan busy for some time now. Not only from her own professional perspective, but also from her position as professor at the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm where she educates the next generation of jewellery designers.
Her previous collection ‘Canvas’ referred literally to paintings, but this time she wanted to be more precise in comparing the two positions. In stead of just focusing on the end product, she this time incorporated also the making of the work into the concept. Where as the jeweller makes his or her work mostly in the solitude of the studio, fine art- and industrial design artists rely more and more on execution by others. It led Pontoppidan to a simple conclusion. She enlisted specialized assistance to produce her new work: painters coloured canvas, students made metal backings and goldsmiths the staples needed for fixating a three-dimensional form. Also the selling price was part of the idea: producing larger qualities leads to lower prices.
Based on these simple points of departure, Karen Pontoppidan realized a stunning group of a 100 different brooches, which Galerie Rob Koudijs has the privilege of showing in its entirety for the first time. Naturally Pontoppidan remains the creative author, but the way the work came about, gives an interesting comment on the usual workshop approach. Fortunately it also resulted in seductively coloured, very wearable pieces of jewellery, without, for the time being, a fine-arts-price-tag.

EXPO ‘JEX – Jewelry by Petra Zimmermann’ – MAK, Vienna (AT) – 20 Fevr.-20 Mai 2013

J E X – Jewelry Exhibition - Jewelry by Petra Zimmermann

Wed, 20.02.2013–Mon, 20.05.2013 – MAK Metal Study Collection

JEX - Petra Zimmermann
Petra Zimmermann’s jewelry objects are forthright, sensuous, and opulent. Her early works already reveal an artistic strategy she has continued to pursue ever since: an allusive confrontation of provided material and individually designed plastic forms. However, the objects produced in this way avail of more than just their decorative function; Zimmermann’s works are far more “thought impulses” bringing up aesthetic questions of appeal, value and the transitoriness of beauty. They impress as subtle works of art that cause the conventional barriers between design, the applied arts and fine arts to falter.
Following on from the series of rings and bracelets she has been producing since 1998, another strand of work has emerged since 2002, figurative brooches based on cuttings from the print media. While the rings and bracelets are defined by reflections of glamour associated with jewelry, the brooches meanwhile manifest Zimmermann’s interest shifting onto the representation of the human body in the media. Her most recent works show Zimmermann extending her thematic range with images of design and architectural objects, also floral motifs.
The exhibition is presenting the first overall survey of the artist’s oeuvre with around 100 exhibits—created between 1997 and 2012. Some pieces are being displayed on perforated lacquered plinths designed especially for the exhibition—a reference to Josef Hoffmann’s lattice objects and the tradition of the Wiener Werkstätte.
A section of the exhibition is installed as a “Reader’s Corner,” consisting of two armchairs (based on a design by Frederick J. Kiesler, 1933), and a book shelf with jewelry publications. The selection includes Zimmermann monographs and exhibition catalogues on international trends in contemporary jewelry from the nineteen-seventies until today that have had a fundamental formative influence on the concept of Autorenschmuck—jewelry as an individually creative art—and on the discourse in this sphere: a chance for the visitor to gain information on a field of contemporary jewelry that is generally unfamiliar to the public.
Petra Zimmermann, born in Graz in 1975, studied sculpture at the Vienna University of Applied Arts. In 2010 she won the Eligius Schmuck-Preis (jewelry prize) of the Federal Land of Salzburg, in 2011 the International Cominelli Award. Petra Zimmermann lives and works in Vienna.
