Opening Friday 10th of March, 6 pm - 10 pm

« Like so many things in life, it is more about the journey than the destination and, it seems that people can find and appreciate these struggles and emotions in the finished pieces. »

( Jorge Manilla - Necklace: The damages never forgotten, 2017 Leather, steel. 52 x 20 x 7 cm)

« Trying to find the answers about why the last time I am often overcome with waves of different emotions.
I decided to make work as a kind of personal emotional archive to read and understand this feeling in a different way.
These moments are very unpredictable and very often take me along very unexpected paths that can go from the desperation to the calmness, from the nostalgia to the happiness I have more and more the feeling I need to express something and using materials, shapes, textures, colours, emotions, feelings as tools try to make individual small stories and even when this confrontation is not easy I don’t want to lose the ability to be comprehensible to any sensitive people.

I often worry that people is indifferent to this kind of expressions in art and refuse to experience purely emotional response to purely visual, static artistically expressions in this case my jewellery pieces. Doing this personal archive, I want to create images that I think will trigger the people with their feelings, images of personal experiences, memories of pleasure of maybe memories of pain. And I enjoy of my work adding visual elements that confirm messages of create confrontations. I like to do and show the process of the work and the making, some pieces looks like not finished, the Intime moments in the studio that can show that making this kind of work can be very hard and mentally draining.
Realizing this made me feel a little more relaxed about wasting my life creating jewellery pieces. Like so many things in life, it is more about the journey than the destination and, it seems that people can find and appreciate these struggles and emotions in the finished pieces. I want to abrupt the general feeling and discover new messages on it, I want to abrupt the materials and create my personal way of communicate, I want to abrupt my emotions and let me go to a new dimension of feelings.« Jorge Manilla

The extraordinary power of objects is obtained, because people believe in them. The more mundane the objects are, the more powerful they become.
My practice contextualizes the primitive energy that is submerged beneath the layers of garments. When the body is removed, the absence becomes an empty structure. The internal structure is evidence of human existence. It remains full of authentic spirit and fantasy.
Through the processes of deconstructing and reconstructing materials into symbolic forms, I uncover the hidden intimate and sensual power of humanity. It is a moment when ordinary objects become surreal and uncanny in order to redeem the socially constructed expectations and perceptions.

She just had an exhibition, Unexpected, since  NOV 24th 2016  at Craft Council of British Columbia‎ Gallery, 1386 Cartwright Street, Granville Island; Vancouver V6H 3R8 – An Exhibition by the Vancouver Metal Arts Association

Unexpected explores the strange and sometimes discordant elements that make the viewing, wearing, and making of Contemporary Jewellery an enjoyable endeavor.
The unexpected and Contemporary Art Jewellery are by no means strange bedfellows- viewers and wearers of Contemporary Jewellery often seek out our discipline because it is unusual and extra-ordinary. The unusual, and unusual elements and materials, have become de rigueur in a creative world that continues to embrace post-disciplinary art practices which move beyond medium centered approaches to making.

Jina Seo

EXPO ‘Sanna Svedestedt : Void’ – Byhuset, Krokom (Sweden) – 22 Juin-11 Aout 2013

Sanna Svedestedt: Void  -  Byhuset (Krokom, Sweden)

The leather craft has a strong connection to the Swedish culture, both in modern fashion within the shoes and bags industry, as well as traditional Sami craft, the Duodji. Artist Sanna Svedestedt has taken on the leather as a challenge and creates bold jewellery pieces from naturally tanned skins. This summer her work is exhibited at Byhuset Rödön, where work from three different collections is on show. All of them with one thing in common – the void – the empty spaces.
« There is a thrill in trying to create an exact shape in a soft, natural material that has no inherent exactness. When I create my leather pieces I try to cooperate with the material. The leather has such a strength and power, and I get the most interesting results when my manipulation interacts with the material’s natural movements. Many of my pieces have an empty space, a void, within them. The void gives a presence as well as lightness to the piece. I want to create a strong contrast between the heavy appearance and what they actually feel like when you wear the jewellery. »  - Sanna Svedestedt

Sanna Svedestedt: Void - Byhuset (Krokom, Sweden) 22-Jun-2013 - 11-Aug-2013 website: www.byhuset.se mail: info@byhuset.se

« I experiment w/ old leather shaping techniques. It is an exciting material w/ possibilities to create sharp & exact shapes that look very heavy but are surprisingly light when you wear them. These objects demand their place on the body. With the right touch, & quite a lot of stubbornness, the leather transforms into the desired shape. I like the fact that this is a very old technique, & that I can develop it into a contemporary expression. »

COUP de COEUR ! Andrea Janosik, silver & leather jewelry

Classé dans : Andrea JANOSIK (SK),COUP DE COEUR,cuir / leather,metal,Slovaquie (SK) — bijoucontemporain @ 0:16

Andrea Janosik, Slovaquian, is a graduate from Parsons School of Design & Eugene Lange College, New York, with a BA/BFA in product design/metals and creative writing. After graduating, she continued her education at the New York Studio School of Painting and Sculpture and the Lern Ort Studio, and later at the School of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, Germany. Ms. Janosik has exhibited at “SOFA” in both New York and Chicago, and many other galleries And museums in the US and Germany. In 2008 she exhibited in a juried craft show at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.

» Andrea Janosik has become a specialist in working with leather. Using a variety of leathers, including cords and flat pieces, she created very sculptural pieces. Many pieces are made rolling the leather into shapes, such as the cones in the necklace above, or other techniques of folding or bunching the leather. Her work is very laborious as she spends hours precisely cutting and shaping the leather pieces. »

COUP de COEUR ! Sarah Heulwen Lewis – LEATHER !

« Sarah Heulwen Lewis brings her background in fashion artifacts to her leather hand-crafted accessories. This includes traditional techniques of pattern cutting, hand forging, soldering metal, and hand stitching and dying. She combines all this with leather laser cutting to create striking pieces. » (WearableArtblog)

«  ‘Dissolution’ uses skills acquired from all areas of expertise; this includes traditional techniques of pattern cutting, hand forging, soldering, hand stitching and hand dying, mixed with a non traditional method of laser cutting. The concept for this collection derived from my childhood traumatic experiences of multiple deaths within the family, and many were a direct result of the effects of cancer. For this reason the topic of disintegration and the degeneration of mind and body have always been of interest and the project was a cathartic method of using these traumatic life experiences into my practice based studio work. The intention was to juxtapose the ugliness of the disease and the ‘beauty’ of cancer, the metamorphosis of one’s body from one form into another through the disease and treatment received. »
