SOPHIE HANAGARTH : IRONS and TRAPS

« From Vulcain and his anvil to chained Prometheus with his iron ring, wrought iron jewelry can be seen as a radical way of imagining ornaments, as pure, rough jewels ».

- Until 17 April 2013www.galerievundv.at

2013 IRONS and TRAPS, Galerie V, Wien-

Jewelry in a New Iron Age by 60 International Artists

Velvet da Vinci San Francisco exhibition
March 1 – April 14, 2013
Artists’ reception Friday, March 1, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m.

FERROUS, an exhibition of jewelry using iron, steel, and steel alloys. Although the use of iron dates back more than two thousand years, this humble material is more commonly used for agriculture and industrial purposes than adornment. A significant exception is the Berlin Iron Jewelry of the early 19th century. The Prussian Royal family funded the uprising against Napoleon by encouraging wealthy citizens to exchange their precious gold and silver for intricately fabricated iron jewelry
.Intricacy is just one aspect the 60 artists of FERROUS explore with this versatile material. Known for its strength and lightness, the steel and iron jewelry of FERROUS is both rusty and shiny, sheet and wire, bejeweled and modest. The exhibition will take place simultaneously at Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco and as a virtual exhibition at crafthaus online. In May FERROUS will travel to 18Karat Gallery in Toronto, Canada as part of The Society of North American Goldsmith’s annual conference.

Enfoncer le CLOU ………….. ou … « DES CLOUS ! » ?

EXPO ‘L’insostenibile leggerezza dell’oro’ – Alternatives Gallery, Rome (IT) – 10 Nov.-3 Dec. 2011

Kazumi NaganoMaria Rosa Franzin

L’insostenibile leggerezza dell’oro 10.11 – 3.12 2011

The Unbearable Lightness of gold
Alternatives is proud to present the works of two jewellery artists, Maria Rosa Franzin and Kazumi Nagano, who have been protagonists on the international contemporary jewellery scene for many years. The two artists come from two very different worlds, Italy and Japan, but nonetheless share the same intent in their research, in the analysis of the weight of metals and the lightness achieved in the transformation process. This challenge has brought them to make complex structures formed by the use of tiny specks of gold or thin gold wire interwoven as if it were thread. Two worlds, two cultures, that are confronted on the diverse approaches to manipulating and transforming gold, by excellence the most noble of materials.

http://www.alternatives.it/calendario/Nagano.jpg
Kazumi Nagano necklace

« Kazumi Nagano from Tokyo weaves strands of gold thread into voluminous three-dimensional structures. The artist uses different colours of gold to achieve light and shade effects, giving depth to the pieces. The gold thread is combined with nylon thread to create suppleness, rendering her works soft to touch and facilitating interrelation with the human body. Interesting and unexpected results are attained. The different shades of colour refer back to her years of training as an artist, in which time she used the ancient Japanese Nihonga technique in her paintings.«

http://www.alternatives.it/mostre/mostre/nagano_franzin/13_G.jpg
Maria Rosa Franzin

« Maria Rosa Franzin from Padua uses tiny specks of fine gold on the surface of white or oxidised silver, and by doing so uses gold as if it were paint that she applies to the surface of the metal in the form of brush strokes or tiny dots. This pictorial approach stems from her background at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice where she trained as a painter. Since the early days, Franzin has made use of gold in a very light, airy and insubstantial manner, almost wanting us to forget the heavy nature of the metal. The gold specks almost become intangible, but at the same time are able to capture the light and show us the beauty of its warm natural colour in contrast to that of the dark or white silver it is lying on. »

EXPO ‘Patricia Lemaire – Jardin Imaginaire’ – Galerie Caractère, Neuchatel (CH) – 2 Sept.-3 Nov. 2011

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/297858_2102131430675_1167130470_32080464_3911803_n.jpg

Nicola Mather trained and graduated with a BA (Hons) in Silversmithing and Jewellery from the Glasgow School of Art in 2010.
Nicola uses new technologies in jewellery combined with more traditional techniques to create unique ethereal pieces which are intricate and resilient. Inspired by seeds and pods which she collects, Nicola has studied these organic forms closely to reveal the beautiful struture, texture and form which she conveys in her designs.

The designs are often generated from interests in repetition of a single form and extensive experimentation of material.  By combining linear forms with vibrant gemstones Nicola mirrors the delicate qualities of organic structures whilst adding her own unique style.  The jewellery is beautifully intricate but deceptively resilient combining form and movement.

Nicola has already exhibited alongside estalished jewellers at the Barbican in 2010 and is now a licentiate of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
‘Etched Print’ Series
The jewellery in this series are all one-off pieces etched with Nicola’s own prints.  These pieces are avaliable on a commission basis. For more information about this series please contact Nicola. All of the jewellery are predominantly made with sterling silver with some stainless steel findings

*Reception: June 4, 4-7pm
Informal talk about the work and process will be at 4:30pm

Artist quote: My work is about sensitive forms and the delicate lines that move through them. Craftsmanship and attention to details are vital to the completion of each piece.

About the work: Metalsmith Victoria Moore works primarily in steel to create exquisitely patterned jewelry. The expected application of steel as a macho structural material inspires her to rebel against that expectation to create forms and surfaces from steel and other metals that are personal, feminine, soft and tactile.

About the technique: Victoria Moore’s core technique is Damascus steel, a layered steel that has origins in Middle Eastern sword-making from 1100 to 1700 AD. The layered metal is made from alternating layers of steel and iron that are forged together and uniquely patterned by carving and flattening. The movement of the patterned line within each forged piece is important to the development of each shape. Gold and diamonds highlight the movement of the line.

Brief artist background: Victoria has a MFA in metalsmithing from Rochester Institute of Technology and a BA from the University of Maryland, concentrating in sculpture. Starting with a childhood of making things Moore has devoted her life to hand made creations, never without some object in progress.

Anya Pinchuk

« My work is dominated by structure and abstraction. I try to create the illusion of a solid surface by using positive and negative spaces, light and shadows, and transparency. In my work I use my knowledge of geometry to create three dimensional volumetric forms using planes, tubes, and cones, juxtaposing somewhat organic silhouettes and geometric shapes, structure, and patterns. I use repetition as a principle. In the overall appearance (the patterns that I create) as well as in the constructing process (multiple soldering). The pieces are a combination of simplicity (of a shape, line, and form) and complexity (of a pattern, surface, and process) in each piece. Geometric and organic qualities, squares and circles, symmetry and asymmetry, plainness and intricacy, limits and infinity, solidity and transparency coexist in my work. »
