Discovered at the Annual Marzee Selection Of Graduate Work Jewellery

« It’s graduation show time!  This weekend (2 july 2011) the ABKM, Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Maastricht presents their Graduates in the old SamDecor Factory. These objects are by Dutch Iris Verstappen, who graduated in Jewelry Design. » (THANKS to Matandmedesign, for pictures and english text !)

LOVE the « Systemic Lupus Erythematosus« , serie of « donuts » in porcelain ……. loved these « medicine » perhaps because actually I need this sort of medicine …………… but these ones are much more nicer than the ones I have to take !!!
« The title is ‘Systemic lupus erythematosus’, which is usually a medical term for an autoimmune connective tissue disease that can affect parts of the body. The immune system attacks the body’s cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. Obviously Iris transferred this description of the disease into a series of objects that show various stages of the illness.
All rings have an engraving of substances that are used for various sicknesses. When you have ‘Lupus’, your immune system turns against parts of the body it is designed to protect. I guess every ring is an image of a possible part of your body that could be affected and the possible medicine you would take to prevent the worst. I am just showing 5 of them, but Iris made about 20.  »

« My name is Nina Sajet I’m a ceramic/jewelry designer »
« beads.
When I was a little girl, I was always playing with beads. I had a lot of them, every color. I was making necklaces, bracelets earrings and rings.
Now after studying design sometime making things doesn’t feel like playing anymore.
Thats way I start again to play with beads. But this time I made the beads from porselain.
And  this time the beads are a lot bigger. Like me.
Now they are ready to become something else.“

COUP de COEUR : Katherine WHEELER whites

Katherine Wheeler is a Melbourne based artist, who completed a bachelor of Fine arts, Gold and silversmithing at RMIT in 2007, and a Diploma of fine arts at RMIT in 2003. Since graduating she has continued to make art jewellery and hollow ware in her Melbourne studio. In 2010 she collaborated with Printmaking artist Abby Seymour for the exhibition Hidden Facets, which was shown at Hand Held gallery in Melbourne, and Gaffa Gallery in Sydney. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in Australia and two international shows, including Melbourne Hollow Ware, at Gallerie Marzee in the Netherlands, Precious Pendants at Object gallery in Sydney, Figment at E.g.etal in Melbourne, and in 2011 The art of Engagement at Objectspace in New Zealand. Her work is represented in the Gallerie Marzee collection, and the W.E.McMillan Collection. Katherine enjoys the process of making, and pushing the materials she uses (fine silver, porcelain, polymer clay, glass, paper) to produce unexpected results. (Craft Victoria)

« Wheeler works impulsively, and intuitively to create mysteriously fragile and beautiful jewellery and hollow ware objects. Through her work, themes of the ambiguous and curious are explored, while inspiration is drawn from sea life, collection, domestic objects, memory and the anthropomorphic. Wheeler’s intruiging work posesses a sense of illusion, which is created through colour, form, technique and materials.«  (it’s what « Wheeler » says on her blog ! ;-) …)
« My jewellery pieces are mostly oversized, sculptural and reflect the hollow ware pieces. They are made as jewellery so they will have a connection point to the body.
I really like making oversized rings. When worn they can have the appearance and feel of a growth, or being a continuation of the body, living and existing, or co-existing with the person

(a 2010 exhibition)

« The concept of the home, living spaces, domestic objects, and how they relate to the body inspire my work.  Natural forms (sea life) do have a definite influence over the aesthetic of my work.
Genetic engineering and human intervention in nature is also something I think about when making. Often my pieces have an anthropomorphic feel, which I think can contribute to the success of a piece.

White is also a dominant feature of your work – tell me why?
I use white for several reasons.  It gives the appearance of something aged, dried out, skeletal or fossilised.
It camouflages and unifies the different materials, possibly tricking the eye as to what it is seeing, and how it would feel.
White mutes, accentuates marks from making, and gives beauty.

EXPO ‘A Bit of Clay on the Skin: New Ceramic Jewelry’ – MAD Museum, NY (US) – 15 Mars-4 Sept. 2011

L’exposition de Limoges part à new-York ! :-)
The Exhibition is traveling from Limoges, France, to New York, USA

(cf article  : «  EXPO ‘Un peu de terre sur la peau’ – FONDATION BERNARDAUD, Limoges (FR) – 16 juin-16 oct 2010« )

EXPO 'A Bit of Clay on the Skin: New Ceramic Jewelry' - MAD Museum, NY (US) - 15 Mars-4 Sept. 2011 dans ceramique 188041_152613144796629_7257687_n

A Bit of Clay on the Skin: New Ceramic Jewelry explores the manifold appeal of ceramics, especially porcelain, in jewelry. Organized by the Fondation d’Entreprise Bernardaud and curated by the renowned German-born goldsmith and jewelry artist Monika Brugger, the exhibition showcases the versatility and allure of the medium, which can be modeled or cast, used alone or with metal, wood, and stone, and vary in color and texture. Best known as the stuff of the luxurious and the mundane, of fine tableware and technical equipment, when used in jewelry, porcelain sparks the visual and physical sensations to become an object of desire.
The exhibition showcases the scope and ingenuity of the more than one hundred works on view and features the work of 18 cutting-edge jewelry artists, including creations by such notables as Peter Hoogeboom, Evert Nijland, Ted Noten (The Netherlands), Gésine Hackenberg (Germany), Marie Pendariès (France), and Shu-Lin Wu (Taiwan). While some make reference to traditional jewelry in materials and symbolism, others altogether redefine it in substance, form, and matter.
« Even though the Egyptians produced seal rings in faience, and the Greeks and Romans gilded terracotta to imitate gold, the use of ceramics in the fabrication of jewelry was abandoned centuries ago, » says curator Monika Brugger. « Today many artists, like those assembled in this show, are popularizing porcelain as a compelling material for jewelry. »
« Ceramic jewelry embodies the creative transformation of a humble Earth material by art and industry into a wearable object of great refinement and sensuality, » notes MAD’s Jewelry Curator Ursula Ilse-Neuman. « Exploring new currents in art jewelry is a vital part of the Museum’s mission, » she continues. « We are delighted to present these visually and intellectually engaging works to a New York audience. »
