EXPO ‘Body Jewels’ – TextielMuseum, Tilburg (NL) – 29 Mars 2014-15 mars 2015

Body Jewels - textielmuseum

29 March 2014 till 15 March 2015

 Body jewels - TextielMuseum

In Body Jewels, the TextielMuseum presents a large selection of Dutch jewellery from its own collection, alongside a number of high-profile commissions produced in the TextielLab. Jewellery no longer serves only as an expensive status symbol, but has evolved in recent decades into art, fashion and sometimes almost unwearable objects. Body Jewels traces a number of these developments.

In the mid-1960s, a young generation of jewellers turned away from traditional jewellery practices. They set out to design jewellery that was accessible to all, experimenting with everyday, ‘base’ materials such as textiles, plastic and rubber. The use of textiles in jewellery culminated in the 1980s. Several artists with a textile background – such as Mecky van den Brink, LAM de Wolf and Beppe Kessler – gained recognition in the jewellery world and beyond, prompting the TextielMuseum to begin its own jewellery collection.

Both jewellery design and textiles have traditionally been associated with ‘women’s work’ and ‘the feminine’. Consequently, expressions are often dismissed as applied rather than fine art, as the makers would like. The older generation of innovators paved the way for jewellery ‘s recognition as a serious mode of self-expression. Today, those prejudices and value judgements carry far less weight.

The exhibition includes works by Maria Blaisse, Ela Bauer, Ellis Belier, Joke Brakman and Claudy Berbéé, Mecky van den Brink, Brigit Daamen, Iris Eichenberg, Studio Formafantasma, Willemijn de Greef, Maria Hees, Marion Herbst, Bart Hess, Lolkje op de Hoek, Beppe Kessler, Digna Kosse, Sonja Landweer, Marijke de Ley, Felieke van der Leest, Lous Martin, Hill Metselaar, Regula Maria Müller, Chequita Nahar, Evert Nijland, Emilie Pallard and Niels Heymans, Alet Pilon, Winde Rienstra, Margot Rolf, Lia de Sain, Jenna Tas, Annemarie Timmer, Thea Tolsma, Miriam Verbeek, Lie van der Werff and LAM de Wolf.

This exhibition gathers a series of pieces produced by twenty-one Argentine designers.

It consist of a variety of works that, even if they have contemporary textile jewelry genre as a strong reference, they often transcend it and play with its borders and limits using their own individual expressive resources.

Thus, we can see how shapes, textures and colors are expressed in a variety of materials and techniques in which also arises the peculiar relation notions on the human body as a carrier, in some cases, since there are pieces that step aside from this requirement of traditional jewelry´s typical function: be worn by someone.

Mina Kang

« I have earned a master’s degree of jewelry design at Kook-Min university and I am now in activity as a jewelry-making artist. From the young age, I got much interested in sewing and juwely making, thanks to the mother who are skillful in sewing and knotwork. Thru my works I am trying to express my various feelings and emotions in combination of lines, colours and the concept of space. »

« Her work is « Light, colorful, refreshing » – The pieces are sewn bits of fabrics in contrasting colors and malleable geometric shapes. The strictness of the architectural order of these round and angular objects is almost at odds with the airy materiality of the pieces. The sophisticated rhythm of the structure and color of the pins is in perfect sync with their technically precise construction. » (BKV-Prize 2012 for young applied arts)

Got the BLUES with Emily WAINWRIGHT

Classé dans : COUP DE COEUR,ECOLE / SCHOOLS,Emily WAINWRIGHT (UK),Grande-Bretagne (UK),textile — bijoucontemporain @ 17:07

Emily WAINWRIGHT : « By exploring the potential of stacking, repeating and joining ‘ready-made’ multiples, I have created a collection of tactile textiles samples which push the boundaries between fashion and textiles art. »

Emily Wainwright

Creative Student Award 2012 at  School of the Arts, Loughborough University (UK) : Emily graduated with First Class Honours in (BA Hons) Multimedia Textiles, at Loughborough University School of the Arts in 2012.

Emily Wainwright - 2012

By exploring the potential of stacking, repeating and joining ‘ready-made’ multiples, such as cable ties and curtain hooks to create collections of striking, interactive and large-scale body adornment pieces which merge the boundaries between fashion and installation art; Emily manipulates ordinary, non-textiles materials and objects to create extraordinary aesthetics. She strives to adapt, reinvent and up-cycle non-textiles materials and transforms them into sculptural mixed media textiles. Emily’s work is lead by materials and process as the three dimensional forms are developed through experimentation, mistakes and the exploration of juxtaposing materials, surfaces and techniques. Emily hopes to continue experimenting with combining new and old textiles processes as well as introducing unexpected objects and materials to create exciting, tactile and interactive pieces. She enjoys creating new forms and surfaces whether it be for the Fashion industry, the Interiors market or for a Textiles-Art purpose.

Chiara Scarpitti : poésie bien encadrée

Classé dans : Chiara SCARPITTI (IT),COUP DE COEUR,Italie (IT),textile — bijoucontemporain @ 21:24

 Chiara Scarpitti

« Her jewels are very special, they are created by a mixture of different materials which define a strong style.
The design approach is alchemic. The starting point of alchemy is the unity of matter: matter is one, but can take myriad forms and be combined in many others inexhaustible ways. From raw material borns also the work of a designer. Both a designer that an alchemist work with the idea of “practice trasmutatoria”. For both, values are given specifically to the mass, space, light and shadow, and is active the participation of the body to these physical elements. Both live and think the object of their search. Oriented research, however, to the “recovery of manual dexterity, to the practical experiment, to the verify in the laboratory”.
The haute couture tailoring techniques, along with inkjet prints on silk combine the industrial chemical cut steel to create a new type of jewellery between design and craftsmanship, unicity and seriality. There’s an attempt to return with an aura of mystery and magic in who wears this jewel. Reactions between jewelry and body, between jewelry and another, between jewelry and the space around him, “Reaction Poétique”. » (design catwalk)
