‘LOOT: Mad About Jewelry’ Returns this Spring with 54 Artists from 21 Countries

LOOT spring 2017

From April 4 through 8, 2017, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) presents LOOT: MAD About Jewelry, the annual exhibition and sale of contemporary art jewelry. Now in its 17th edition, LOOT presents a cross-section of the most exciting cutting-edge art jewelry designs, while offering the public a rare opportunity to meet and acquire pieces directly from some of the most skilled creators in the field. A striking example of the evolving possibilities of jewelry as an art form, LOOT: MAD About Jewelry champions the vision and craftsmanship of outstanding art jewelers—most of whom have never before shown work in the United States.

This year’s edition welcomes 54 artists from 21 countries, the majority of whom have never been shown in New York. All were selected by Bryna Pomp following a full year of travel and research.

THE LOOT ACQUISITION PRIZE
Awarded by a jury, the LOOT Acquisition Prize seeks to recognize a LOOT jewelry artist whose work reflects a maturity in artistry and concept; exhibits both a superior and experimental understanding of materials and form; and demonstrates expertise in technique and execution. The 2017 jury is chaired by William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator Shannon R. Stratton, Assistant Curator Barbara Paris Gifford, and LOOT Curator Bryna Pomp. The 2017 LOOT Acquisition Prize will be awarded on April 3 at the Opening Benefit dinner.

« (My) inspiration is nature and industry combined. What have we done? »

(SURTOUT en écoutant « I‘m calling you » !!)

VIRUS de la COMPARAISON ………. Isabell Schaupp / Aran Galligan

« The White Room »
Solo exhibition by SteffiGötze ContemporaryJewelry at La Galeller in Sevilla, Spain
October 7th until November 24th 2016

"The White Room" Solo exhibition by SteffiGötze ContemporaryJewelry at La Galeller in Sevilla, Spain October 7th until November 24th 2016(STEFFI GÖTZE - brooch 2015 – Inside Outside collection – silver, copper, enamel. 8 x 1.5 x 9 cm…)

Born in Germany, currently living and working in Berlin, I have graduated from the School of Applied Art and Design in Seville (Spain) in enamel art, silversmithing and jewelry. Contemporary jewelry is my way to tell stories, ask questions, communicate and provoce communication.
« My work is an experimental and personal dialogue with the contrariety of two concepts and their relation to each other. The conscious and the unconscious, the past and the future, the truth and the lie, the go and the stop, the remembrance and the forgetfulness, the inside and the outside, the maker and the observer, you and me.
I am interested in the connection of two concepts and the undefined space in between them. »

« CHAINED INTERPRETATIONS » by Liana Pattihis.

 "CHAINED INTERPRETATIONS" by Liana Pattihis

» The processes Liana uses in making her jewellery are ones of building and burying…The natural quality of the surface gives a feel of a much earlier age, yet buried under the enamel are anonymous, potentially unattractive, silver chains of this age of mass production. The point of delight is not only that unique, colourful and exciting pieces of jewellery are created, but that the rules of enamelling have been broken and rewritten so successfully. » Caroline Broadhead August 2010

Esme Parsons graduated from University for the Creative Arts (UCA) Rochester in 2014 having completed her Ba Hons degree in Silversmithing, Goldsmithing and Jewellery, since then Esme has moved to Edinburgh to take up a post as Artist-in-Residence at Edinburgh College of Art.

Esme specialised in enamelling and is a member of the Guild of Enamelers and the British Society of Enamelers, but she also specialised in acid etch, of which all her designs are hand drawn.

« this is a range of jewellery created for my Final Major Project at UCA Rochester, the range is based on the urban landscape examining areas that usually go unnoticed or are deemed unsightly, such as barbed fencing, satellite dishes, scaffolding… with colours inspired by the vibrant colours of graffiti, posters, and road markings. i find the diversity of urban areas an endless source of inspiration, and amazing places to explore. all my work is hand made as i believe in the preservation of craft through hand made objects. »

selected for SCHMUCK 2015 : Kaori Juzu

Classé dans : email / enamel,Japon (JP),Kaori JUZU (JP/DK),SCHMUCK (DE) — bijoucontemporain @ 0:13

Kaori Juzu

«  »Jewellery » is a word that can give anyone a concrete image in a moment, though it is associated with so many different sorts of work.
The word itself is so common that no one seems to pay attention anymore.
And there could be a gap between my work and what people usually recognize as jewellery…
One day I found one precious name in danish which better describes,
what I experience in the process of making
« klenodie »
treasure, gem, jewel …just a small thing,
but it always makes me feel warm. »

Kaori Juzu - mare nostrum - brooch 2012. enamel, copper, 14kt gold. Kaori Juzu – mare nostrum – brooch 2012. enamel, copper, 14kt gold.
nominated for Mari Funaki Award for Contemporary Jewellery

« Handmade Enamel Treasures by Kaori Juzu
I love it when craft can pull through and show its face in a number of different realms. Often you see this in galleries, where an artist creates using handiwork that might be considered craft. But they don’t use the material for functional purposes, mainly for expression and to build on a concept or idea. If there’s someone who sits in this murky area it would be artist Kaori Juzu. Born in Fukuoka, Japan she moved to Bornholm in Denmark to study art, where she then founded a small line of jewellery. After training with well-known Danish jewellery designer Per Suntum, Kaori set up her own studio producing experimental brooches.
Kaori crafts by hand what she now calls ‘klenodie’. This title is a Danish word for artefact, gem, jewel, or treasure, encapsulating her pieces under this wide spectrum. She uses a mixture of copper, silver, and gold depending on the idea at hand. The metal is carefully hammered and sculpted in to shape, after a mixture of enamels (powdered glass) are applied to the metal which react in the kiln at high temperature creating a unique colour pattern and surface texture. Her forms and compositions are quite exquisite, they remind me of abstract objects carefully arranged on a canvas, the only twist is that they’re actually made of metal and are at a smaller scale. It’s fantastic to see such experimentation.
The more I explore as a creative the less I’m worried about the particular medium used. It’s more impressive to see a creative use a multitude of materials to bring an idea in to fruition, overstepping the boundaries as it were.
