THE RING – the most common piece of jewellery can be full of meaning, a personal statement sometimes showing itself as a technical miracle or purely decorative and beautiful. It can demand attention, be an invitation to play, be filled with tears and secrets – and is to be worn for one day or for ever.
In homage to the ring Galleri Hnoss has invited all the jewellery artists exhibited in the gallery since the start in 1997 to produce one ring each. The result is now to be seen in the exhibition THE RING – jewel forever. The show consisting of over one hundred rings is a vibrant collection of different expressions, thoughts and forms

In connection with the exhibition on September 9 we are also arranging aseminar : The Ring – jewel forever. The theme is the ring seen from different perspectives. We are very proud to announce the speakers: Anna Schetelich from Galerie Oona, Germany, Professor Otto Kunzli, Germany, and Manuel Vilhena, jewellery artist from Portugal. Moderator is Love Jönsson, crafts critic and guest lecturer at HDK, University of Gothenburg. The seminar is a collaboration between Galleri Hnoss and the Department of Jewellery Art at HDK, with support from Gothenburg Crafts Association, Estrid Ericsson’s Foundation, Wilhelm and Martina Lundgren Fund, and the family Wikanders Foundation.

COUP de COEUR : Paolo SCURA – City rings

Classé dans : COUP DE COEUR,Italie (IT),Paolo SCURA (IT),rings,www KitandCaboodle,www Klimt02 — bijoucontemporain @ 0:11

 Paolo Scura

« The City is my home.
Every city I visit, every pavement I walk upon and every wall I come across tells me a story. They are unique stories about their inhabitants: their values, emotions, needs, dreams and desires… all are reflected on the surfaces of these urban environments. It is their constant evolutions which provide a boundless collection of juxtapositions: between the new and the old, between chaos and order, between the accidental and the calculated. Streets, buildings, walls, surfaces of various materials and colours become a mixing ground where boundaries clash, blur and dissolve.
There is a symbiosis in all of that  we change our environment and then we change in response to our environment. The city wears us and in return we begin to wear the city. I find all this beautiful, and it is by collecting those impressions and combining them, but at the same time contrasting them, with the fine aesthetics of jewellery that I create my work. Stitched, pierced, punched, melted, fused, cast, constructed, invented…. Small collisions, paradoxical jewellery sculptures from the everyday. »

COUP de COEUR : Inari KIURU – One hundred rings of solitude

Classé dans : COUP DE COEUR,Inari KIURU (FI),Japon (JP),rings — bijoucontemporain @ 0:06

Inari KIURU

« One hundred rings of solitude » …. cet intitulé m’a profondément touchée …. j’entends une voix de haute-contre chanter « Oh Solitude » (Purcell) ….. la ligne de chant rejoint les lignes-esquisses des bagues, à peine commencées, déjà finies, elles évoquent, suggèrent, esquissent, dessinent (alors qu’Inari Kiuru ne voulait pas dessiner …), montrent un chemin ………
pas une tristesse, juste un « passage », la ligne entre deux choses  …..

« This work belongs to a first year project at RMIT (Melboune (AU) University)  for which I made myself a set of rules: No drawing or sketching (my usual escapes), just model making from materials that might be unfamiliar to me, seeing if I could create one hundred different rings. How many I ended up with? 80? I still haven’t counted.
I remember that all this began from turning wire in a state of confusion about what a « contemporary look » might be, a concept so prevalent in the first year « art jewellery » discussions. I thought at the time that if I blast out something highly asymmetric, warped and quite monochromatic, preferably black and plasticky, avoiding precious metals, surely I’ll succeed – in an ironic way. But as I kept working, the pissed-offness at the notion of « contemporary = cliched » wore off, and the project became a fun experiment which I still like to look at.
Confusion remains, but in such a different way now : )  » (june 2010)

EXPO ‘Ring a Day – 65 artists. 1 year. 365 rings’ – Punch Gallery, Seattle (USA) – 5-29 Mai 2011

Ring a Day
65 artists. 1 year. 365 rings.

May 5 – 29, 2011

Opening Reception: 5 – 8pm
First Thursday, May 5, 2011

As a tie-in to the annual SNAG (Society of North American Goldsmiths) conference, PUNCH presents this totally RAD (Ring a Day) exhibition showcasing 365 rings, accompanied by select photographs to illustrate the diverse, creative and inspiring rings artists have made from Day 1 to Day 365.

Colleen Baran, Kathryn Cole, Shannon Conrad, Nina Gibson and Sara Westermark juried RAD from over 16,000 rings (!!!) submitted to the Ring a Day group on Flickr. The exhibition features 65 international artists with work ranging from ephemeral and conceptual art rings to functional jewelry in both alternative and classic materials.

(Ring 100, Victoria Takahashi, April 10, 2010 – wood, mixed metals, polymer clay, dyed feather, acorn cap)

This project was an open challenge to metalsmiths and other artists across the globe to make one ring a day out of any material for the entire year of 2010. Over the course of the year artists continually added rings, new artists joined the group, ideas morphed into new ideas, artists played off the ideas of other artists, and materials were used in new and unexpected ways. On a daily basis, rings were created, photographed, and posted to the Ring a Day Flickr group. The majority of the artists represented discovered the project through social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, blogs and word of mouth. This project reflects a population of metalsmiths and jewelry makers who are facile with current online technology.

Ring a Day is part of the Society of North American Goldsmith’s yearly conference; an event that brings together 800+ visitors from around the world for exhibitions, artist’s talks, trunk shows and more. SNAG is an international educational non-profit organization that supports and advances the professional practice of artists, designers, jewelers and metalsmiths.

Beth Alber  «Bottles were found in the gutter on my way to work, the gym, my university, travels in B.C. and Ontario. Colleagues, friends and family collected them for me. These used bottles are everywhere. Why? The rings‘ from this collection are a nudge to think about bigger issues: sources of water and landfill /recycling.»

Lise Downe – Tree rings embody the process of growth and the passage of time

http://2010rings.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/stump-rings22.jpg
Anneke van BommelTree Rings are a series of hand built porcelain rings that explore the ecological issues of deforestation, abandonment, the passage of time and memory. Each ring, individually constructed, is a little “tree ghost” or a symbol of what once was
«Tree Rings, une collection de bagues en porcelaine et fabriquées à la main explore les problématiques écologiques de la déforestation, de l’abandon, du passage du temps et de la mémoire. Chaque bague, construite individuellement, est un petit ―fantôme d’arbre‖ ou le symbole de ce qu’il a été.»

Michele Perras – Collection Magneto - Magneto rings -
«Pour 2010 bagues, j’ai exploré les relations entre l’éphémère et l’attraction. Utilisant des aimants et de la poussière d’acier, ces bagues sont toujours un peu déséquilibrées et peu maniables et ont une existence propre. Conscients de leur environnement, elles modifient leur propre état et elles se transforment en état d’objets.»
«For 2010 Rings, I explored relationships between impermanence and attraction. Using rare earth magnets and steel dust, these rings are always a little off kilter, unwieldy and have a life of their own. Aware of their environment, they shift their own states and shift the states of other objects.»

«For 2010 Rings, I revisited a theme explored in 2003. At the time I was caring for my mother and thinking about moth-erhood, hers and mine. With this in mind I experimented with materials and processes used by children making craft projects with their moms. While current methods have deviated, the overall intent is the same. Many results are like the haphazard bouquets we often make for our mothers when we are young.»

Tiana Roebuck – «For this exhibition I chose to work with basic materials that are reminiscent of craft projects from my childhood. From the basics, cotton, thread and paper, to the novelty of ―Shrinky Dink‖ plastic, these materials are processed and transformed through wrapping, knotting and stitching into small series of design explorations.»
