grey- a-re-a: [grey air-ee-uh] an intermediate area; a topic that is not clearly one thing or the other. A grey area is a term for a border in-between two or more things that is unclearly defined, a border that is hard to define or even impossible to define, or a definition where the distinction border tends to move; something that is open to interpretation…

What is contemporary jewellery? What does it mean for different cultures? Does it really have the powerful force that helps to shape our attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviours? How important is it to reach a consensus on its definition? Is it necessary to redefine the way contemporary jewellery is shown, perceived and consumed? Who produces contemporary jewellery? Is it able to reflect a culturally diverse society? How are our notions of space and identity being challenged by globalization? Is the international jewellery scene so international after all? What is being done on both sides of the ocean? What do we know about each other? What can we learn about each other? Can we make it more accessible to a broader audience? Is it possible to share each other’s markets? How can we set the basis for a refreshing and enriching dialogue between jewellery makers from both continents?

With all these on mind, the Otro Diseño, Foundation for Cultural Exchange and Development, and Design Flux join efforts with an array of international organizations and companies bring together artists, designers, jewellery makers, academics, researchers and promoters from Latin America and Europe on a stage that stimulates friendly, creative, and engaging discussions, able to create an interdisciplinary frame of reference for contemporary jewellery and its practices within a truly multinational discourse.

Gray Area proposes a series of encounters that promote intercultural dialogue within the field of contemporary jewellery and, on its first edition, this dialogue is focused in two continents: Latin America and Europe.

From April 12th to 16th 2010, the symposium Gray Area will take place in Mexico City’s Historic Center. The symposium will be complemented by a series of parallel exhibitions and events.

Participants from all over the world are welcomed to attend. We invite you to explore this website to learn more about this exciting event and register to attend the symposium.

We are looking forward to see you all in Mexico City!

EXPO ‘Da Materia a Gioiello’ – 70m2 , Livorno (IT) – 19 Fevr-13 mars 2010

Corrado De Meo, “Peonia Aurea”  -
first price public selection

« The exhibition “Natura e Artificio” organized by the Tuscan section of AGC (Contemporary Jewelry Association, Italy) and the Garden Club Livorno opened on Tuesday 27th of April in the delicious location of Villa Henderson in Livorno.
It is the first exhibition of contemporary jewelry in Livorno and the affluence was amazing.
The idea of this exhibition comes from the interest that goldsmiths always showed for the natural world, especially for flowers, and we wanted to show to the public contemporary interpretations. We asked the authors to confront themselves with the theme of nature, questioning the natural or unnatural meaning of artifice.

The exhibition had no selection, all authors who wanted to join the project could do it. The reason for this as Corrado Demeo – Pluto, chairman of the Tuscan AGC explains, is that we do not intend to create events and exhibitions for experts, rather we want to present open spaces where it is possible to bring the audience in contact with a variety of expressions, in order to grow a sensibility for contemporary confrontation.
The quality revealed by this exhibition is simply determined by the energies devoted to the organization and the self-responsability of the participants.

Three works were selected by a jury, that did not have to agree but each juror chose the piece he considered most valuable according to the theme of the event and his own criteria. Also the public of the Vernissage was asked to choose their preferred piece and the visitors took this task extremely seriously by taking notes and examining all the pieces on exhibit with great attention.
The only false note was the bad weather, but at the end also this brought people to closer relations being forced to cramp under the few roofs in the wonderful garden.

EXPO ‘Exploring Colour’ by Lina Peterson – online exhibitions at the Crafts Council (UK) 18 dec 2009 – 18 jun 2010

Exploring Colour by Lina Peterson : PINK !!

The first thing that strikes you about Lina Peterson’s work is her bold use of colour, from tangy primaries through to fresh fluorescents. The bright and brilliant ‘Dipped’ plastic collection of brooches, part of Peterson’s graduation showcase at the RCA in 2006, was a huge success and yet the colours emerged more by accident than design.

At this point, Peterson was more interested in ‘material qualities and combinations’ than anything else, but as she begins to use colour in a ‘more deliberate way,’ starting with a range of brooches produced for Collect in May 2009, the invitation to explore the theme seems particularly apt. ‘My colour choices have always been pretty arbitrary up until now,’ explains Peterson. ‘They’ve been quite intuitive as I really just went with what I felt worked, but I thought it would be interesting to look at colour in more detail.’

The exploration begins with a closer look at Peterson’s pieces in the Crafts Council Collection: Orange Necklace, 2008, and three Dipped Brooches, acquired in 2009. It ends with two entirely new pieces based on research into the colour pink, which she hopes will lead to a whole new body of work.

from Lina’ s blog:
« I decided to work with the colour pink for two reasons, partly because it’s a colour that has popped up in my work recently and secondly because of its interesting history. Whilst reading up on symbolism related to pink I discovered that its associations are much more varied than expected. Interesting facts about pink include cultural associations – it was originally a colour associated with boys and not until the 1940s that it became a ‘girly’ colour. Also of interest are the psychological effects certain shades of pink can have as well as the colour’s political associations. I read an interesting piece of writing about the symbolism of pink here: Cabinet Magazine
The thing I became most interested in investigating was the idea of a monochromatic piece of jewellery made out of many different materials. I saw two ways of achieving this. Firstly I wanted to paint different materials with the same colour of paint. The individual pieces would look different because of their material properties. Secondly by bringing materials together that were ‘naturally’ pink, I could create an intrinsically pink piece of jewellery.

EXPO ‘Pavel Opocenský : Colocircol’ – Galerie Reverso, Lisbonne (PT) – 13 Mars-9 avril 2010

«  Pavel  Opocenský is not only a highly esteemed jewellery artist and a well known sculptor, but also a great carver – rather a rarity in jewellery. This approach requires the artist to investigate the material, to imagine the invisible and make it perceivable, and last but not least, it demands enormous craftsmanship. In doing so, Pavel pushes to the limits, makes light penetrate hardness, a spectacle that does not just try to impress. His brooches convey unexpected depth; also the play of shadows adds new dimensions to the pieces. The forms remain reduced, with limited colouring, according to the conditions of the material. The beholder finds nothing additional, no decoration in his work. On the contrary, reduction is taking place; he carves out, bores out, files off. Through the artistic treatment, a perfect dialogue between form and material turns out.  » (Olga Zobel Biró MA Galerie Biró, München)
