EXPO ‘CONTEXT’ – Rob Koudijs gallery, Amsterdam (NL) – 20 Avril-1er Mai 2013

KAREN PONTOPPIDAN : « CONTEXT » -  Rob Koudijs gallery -   From 20 April to 1 May 2013

The difference in status between the fine and the applied arts is a phenomenon that has kept Karen Pontoppidan busy for some time now.

KAREN PONTOPPIDAN: "CONTEXT" - Amsterdam - Rob Koudijs gallery - From 20 April to 1 May 2013 http://www.galerierobkoudijs.nl - - The difference in status between the fine and the applied arts is a phenomenon that has kept Karen Pontoppidan busy for some time now.

The difference in status between the fine and the applied arts is a phenomenon that has kept Karen Pontoppidan busy for some time now. Not only from her own professional perspective, but also from her position as professor at the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm where she educates the next generation of jewellery designers.
Her previous collection ‘Canvas’ referred literally to paintings, but this time she wanted to be more precise in comparing the two positions. In stead of just focusing on the end product, she this time incorporated also the making of the work into the concept. Where as the jeweller makes his or her work mostly in the solitude of the studio, fine art- and industrial design artists rely more and more on execution by others. It led Pontoppidan to a simple conclusion. She enlisted specialized assistance to produce her new work: painters coloured canvas, students made metal backings and goldsmiths the staples needed for fixating a three-dimensional form. Also the selling price was part of the idea: producing larger qualities leads to lower prices.
Based on these simple points of departure, Karen Pontoppidan realized a stunning group of a 100 different brooches, which Galerie Rob Koudijs has the privilege of showing in its entirety for the first time. Naturally Pontoppidan remains the creative author, but the way the work came about, gives an interesting comment on the usual workshop approach. Fortunately it also resulted in seductively coloured, very wearable pieces of jewellery, without, for the time being, a fine-arts-price-tag.

Schmuck 2013 – EXPO ‘Matadero’ – Cafe Clara, Munich (DE) – 6-12 Mars 2013

during SCHMUCK :  exhibition « MATADERO » by WALKA STUDIO (Claudia Betancourt + Nano Pulgar)

The MATADERO series, reflects on matters such as death, the relation between body and ornament, the primal origin of corporal ornament and its sacred meaning, associated to the cultures from Latin America and the Pacific Basin.

during SCHMUCK : exhibition "MATADERO" by WALKA STUDIO (claudia betancourt + nano pulgar) The MATADERO series, reflects on matters such as death, the relation between body and ornament, the primal origin of corporal ornament and its sacred meaning, associated to the cultures from Latin America and the Pacific Basin. Place: Cafe Clara, Isabellastraße 8, 80798 München Dates: March 6th - 12 th. Monday Closed Opening hours: 11-19 hrs http://www.walka.cl/proyectos-arte/

« Walka Studio represents duality in all the sense of the word. Claudia Betancourt, intuitive, emotional and profoundly interested in local crafting traditions, and Nano Pulgar, shrewd, rational and highly experimental stand at opposite ends of the spectrum of the creative process. Together they execute a fluid dance which teases the boundaries between art and design. They have a clear notion of the local and a wide, but critical, view of the foreign. And they often engage in clever actions to create a larger and more inclusive audience, intervening public realm and partnering with amicable spaces not traditionally associated to the exhibition of artistic jewellery.
On this occasion, Walka Studio, Cafe Clara and Otro Diseño, bring a Chilean exhibition to Munich, to be one of the many relevant satellite events that surround Schmuck adding true cultural diversity to this international event.
Matadero is the latest collection of the Walka duo. It contains a very specific narrative about Chilean traditional crafting materials, the historical and cultural nexus of the southern cultures of the Pacific Basin and the evolving influence of the conquest of Chile, initiated by the Spaniards in 1541. This narrative, however, is represented in an international language, allowing jewellers and jewellery enthusiasts of all nationalities to understand how this jewellery from across the ocean functions within a mostly western context.
Matadero is a series of necklaces and pendants, jewel categories that step away from the often resorted to European brooch and allude to the prevailing ornament of the Pacific cultures. The series is the product of a long investigation about the symbolical and aesthetic characteristics of body ornamentation in the Pacific Basin until its evolution into contemporary jewellery; as well as the experimentation with new methods to work the cacho de buey or bull’s horn, a traditional material in Chilean craft that has been worked by Betancourt’s family for generations.
The relationship established between body and ornament in Matadero reveals how social custom and stigmas around the subject of death or murder of animals, affect our capacity to deem animal remains as acceptable materials, thus disregarding the origin of body ornamentation and the sacred connotations associated with it in the cultures of the Pacific Islands (Polynesia) and Latin America.
Matadero uses both bull´s horns and hooves which had been part of a previous collection dedicated to the fashion industry, delicately tinted in a faint pink colour for that occasion. The fashionable neckpieces have been deconstructed, burnt and rebuilt as entirely new pieces that fascinate and repulse. The newly transformed pieces allude to one of the darkest periods in Chilean history: the 17 year long dictatorship that was common to many other Latin American countries and which is still a source of preoccupation and reflection for many artists from the continent.
The necklaces and pendants in this exhibition also allude to the particular geographical situation of Chile, a long, thin strip in Latin America which is wedged between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain range. Every piece in the series uses soft, comforting supports and laces made of Andean Alpacas. Surprisingly, the pieces are extremely easy and comfortable to wear, once the repulsion produced by the idea of wearing burnt bones has passed. They are soft, light and smoothing. They are made to be used, as that is how they complete their cycle. And they show Walka’s regal acquaintance with fashion and wearability.
Matadero becomes now a synonym for duality: the series blends cultures, materials, processes, meanings and historical periods in an unusual but profoundly skilful way. I am certain that this exhibition will promote an interesting dialogue and exchange among the participants of Schmuck« .  Valeria Siemelink

BLANC – Ephemerals de Doris Maninger

Classé dans : COUP DE COEUR,Doris MANINGER (AT),textile — bijoucontemporain @ 6:53

Ephemerals

« It is the fourth dimension that I am trying to explore. Through the repetition of an impulsive act I want to channel the action of forming in a performative endurance, aiming to master the senses and intellect of the spectator in a ‘hic et nunc’ continuous encounter. The one ephemeral act in the density of its perception can suspend and transform the experience of time. The inhabited form may live on or fade from existence.

This work is the continuation of my experiments in textile.
The soft and floating thread knotted, entangled, twirled, interlaced, felted….. forms a continuos cloth, a “nest” for our bodies a second skin, ornament and neccesity.

The cloth turns into “stone” and what remains is just an idea of life that has been. »

Contemporary jewellery designers take the traditional jewellery of for instance nomads, pilgrims, explorers, world travellers, refugees and colonists, as the starting point for new designs. The jury selected five winners from a group of 300 competitors. Contemporary themes as globalisation and digitisation can be found in many of the designs. Personal stories, family history and local traditions are often used as source of inspiration. A reflection on the preservation of worldwide cultural heritage, on the reassessment of symbol bearers, on the creation of new traditions and on the simultaneous revival of old ones in a new form, was the purpose of this year’s” New Traditional Jewellery” contest with the title “New Nomads”.

On the underside the chips are woven together with yarn to form a flexible square mat. One side is decorated, the other is gold. The yarn remains visible as a reference to the contacts that are made using chips.
This necklace is only done justice when it is worn”, says the jury. “In several, playful ways things are hidden and things are made visible, and at all times only one side of the necklace is visible. The decorated side refers to the issues of the day: time, communication, money. The golden side (the back of the chips) calls up associations of illustrious civilizations, like the Egypt of the pharaohs and the Mayas. At the same time the chips contain information not visible to the naked eye. This necklace is a bridge in time”.

Juliane Kessler – Title: Traffic sign (brooch)   Material: aluminium, steel
Juliane Keßler: ” Some animals roam the world, using the currents of the wind and the sea for transport. We, the new nomads, consume a lot of fossil energy for our fast progress. Overall, economic efficiency dominates. I oppose this by recycling old traffic signs made of aluminum. Traffic signs regulate movements of people. It takes a lot of energy to transform this aluminum into jewellery with guilloches.”

EXPO ‘Jardins d’hiver’ – Galerie Elsa Vanier, Paris (FR) – 29 Nov. 2012-2 Mars 2013

Jardins d’hiver

Jardins d'hiver - Galerie Elsa Vanier Paris

Heidemarie Herb : splash of colors, sobriety of the geometry

Classé dans : COUP DE COEUR,Heidemarie HERB (DE) — bijoucontemporain @ 23:21

Heidemarie Herb new works : « Network 2012″
(Brass, pigments, 925 Sterling Silver, Wire)

« My creations are inspired by thoughts on the relationship between man and nature in all its expressive possibilities: colours evoking feelings and thoughts, sounds, the life cycle from birth to death, mysteries and secrets concealed by nature.
I like to awaken the senses and the mind, to conjure feelings, to try and destroy the superficiality and individualism prevailing in modern men and women.
My works are there for you to look at, to experience, to make you think and to share.

« Starting point for my working is in everyday life. I make long detours by listening stories on my way home on the bus, finding beauty in broken objects, walking in my surroundings where there is wood and forgotten man made marks on the landscape.
I carry camera and sketchbook with me all the time. I stop my walk on the street to take a snapshot of a moment which otherwise will be forgotten or unseen. I try to catch something I don’t understand or makes me troubled.
I collect other people’s photos, characters of people, make small stories of these with materials to my working table. This transfers into jewellery through a process-based working.
Sometimes jewellery is only about a small hole on a white paper. What remains is the memory of the act.

« Foreign Body: Giving Jewelry a Second Look »

Foreign Body: Giving Jewelry a Second Look features the work of 15 Israeli jewelers who demonstrate an unfaltering commitment to individual expression through highly-developed techniques in jewelry-making. The works in the exhibition challenge traditional, mainstream attitudes toward this ancient practice with surprising investigations on scale, wearability, materials, and narrative or critical content, positioning the body as a locus for unfamiliar encounters between jewelry object and wearer
