EXPO ‘BASALT- Volcanic bijoux’ – Geological Museum, Ramat Hasharon (IL) – 26 Sept. 2016-31 Janv. 2017

BASALT- Volcanic bijoux -

Soon in the  Geological Museum  -

Opening on Monday September 26th, 20h30

An international exhibition that reunites 25 artists from Europe and Israel who have created jewelry especially for this show, utilizing basalt as the central motif.
Taking into consideration the unique properties of this igneous rock – its natural structure, color and texture – the artists have created pieces that provoke questions about preciousness, esthetics, mythology and beliefs.
The exhibition was originally shown in Agde, France (a city built from basalt) in 2015 and was re-curated for the Geological Museum in Ramat HaSharon. / Jean-Yves Le Mignot, Curator, Rachel Sasporta, Curator in charge

Resultat of the call to the artists from the European Union countries. Each discipline within the applied arts, as well as design, photography,…

Vanity is a theme as old as the existence of Art itself. “Remember you will die” whispered the slave to the Roman General during the triumphs. Nowadays, this superstition which became obsession cannot be hidden. Her rebirth in the Contemporary Art is such that Vanity has become true fashion or a lifestyle. “Vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas”. How better than the current age of technology and overconsumption to update this adage? In this month of the dead, Omnia Vanitas proposes a stop in space-time, a time for reflexion to ask themselves the right questions once again.
On this occasion, the WCC-BF and the Koma Gallery exposed 62 artists from Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, France, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Finland and Estonia. In their own way, each of them present their personal interpretation of death and Vanity. As in the exhibition of the European Price for Applied Arts, the artworks will be seen with all the contemplation and the reflexion it requires. In its own way, Omnia will propose to visitors a more intimate perspective on our relationship with life and death.

JEWELLERY ART POETRY AND GEOMETRY
Annamaria Zanella and Renzo Pasquale Exhibition  For the period of the Vienna Festival the Slavik Gallery is presenting a special duo exhibition devoted to the work of the artists – and married couple – Annamaria Zanella and Renzo Pasquale. Although they have quite different styles, their jewellery is complementary. Together, their artefacts form a wonderfully harmonious whole.

Renzo Pasquale, Halsschmuck 2013 "Cilindri liberi", Gold, Silber, Niello, TitanRenzo Pasquale, Halsschmuck 2013 « Cilindri liberi », Gold, Silber, Niello, Titan

Annamaria Zanella‘s fascinating jewellery objects are as exciting as they are unusual. In this exhibition she is presenting colourful necklaces made in idiosyncratic materials to which she gives a special finish with elements in gold. But in her diverse and highly imaginative creative world there is also room for glass, enamel and plastics, all radiant with powerful, finely harmonized colours. Every one of her miniature sculptures is an expression of the artist’s breathtaking inner power and bubbling energy. All richly poetic, many also have a special story to tell, such as the « Gala » brooch in silver, enamel and red plastic that she dedicated to Gala Eluard, who was muse and wife to both Paul Eluard and Salvador Dali.

The work of the jewellery artist Renzo Pasquale is permeated by a great love of geometry. Masterfully worked in silver, titanium and plexiglass, his brooch « Olimpico » betrays his admiration for the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, whose example has inspired Renzo Pasquale to an oeuvre characterized by aesthetic balance, perfect proportions, and the noble harmony of classical Italian poetry. Also a stonemason by training, he invests his gold rings with a special clarity and liveliness through a precise use of cut lapis lazuli, jasper and agate.

It combines works of established artists and promising newcomers in the area of contemporary jewellery design and is the meeting place for collectors, jewellery lovers and museum curators from Germany and abroad. Organized as a worldwide contest, the works are chosen by an internationally renowned curator each year, this time by Eva Eisler, professor at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (AAAD). “Presenting works at the SCHMUCK is an honor for any jewellery designer“, says Dieter Dohr, Management Board Chairman of the GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH. That is also why this time, more than 600 gold smiths and jewellery designers from Germany and abroad applied for the special show. In spring 2015, contributions by 63 artists from 21 countries will finally be on display. This time, Karel Novak from the Czech Republic will be honored as the classic of modern art. Highlight of the SCHMUCK will be the awarding of the Herbert-Hofmann-prizes on Saturday, 14 March 2015 at 5 pm on stage in hall B1. On this day, a jury will select the three best works of the SCHMUCK. Each year, a number of accompanying events group around the special show at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich galleries, museums and cultural institutes.

«This exhibition was conceived to point at a particular phenomenon that is occurring in contemporary jewelry internationally. Enamel as color, surface and image has been reinvigorated and to some degree reinvented as a significant material used by jewelers and metalsmiths internationally. While jewelry has certainly been the primary benefactor and represents the larger part of this exhibition, there has also been a great shift in its use on vessels and tile work. For most of the twentieth century enamel was defined and executed in very specific processes, such as cloisonné, champlevé and Limoges, all very traditional and refined. Modernism did have its influence on more gestural enamel work in the mid fifties and early sixties but even that became formulaic and predictable.
The advent of experimentation with a wide range of materials used by jewelers from the late 20th century to where we are today brought a new curiosity and interest in enamel as a material and not a specific process related to it. The qualities of enamel that drew interest were the inherent characteristics of a vitreous powder that needed a substrate of metal, onto which it melted, flowed and hardened. These became the defining properties jewelers and metalsmiths were interested in without the boundaries of particular processes. The use of enamel by jewelers in this exhibition can be quite raw and in other cases well rendered, but each piece demonstrates a willingness and determination to see what this material can do well.
Contemporary jewelry has for some decades witnessed a shift toward a more democratic use of materials, where plastic stands beside gold, and coal replaces diamonds. Traditional materials were traded in or juxtaposed with materials that possessed a more abstracted value. While the seed of this shift was in part socio/ political and an attempt to rid contemporary jewelry of its status as a symbol of luxury, the qualities of the “new” materials themselves began to manifest their own presence in the work. All materials have inherent meaning, but they also have a visual presence that can be used to reinforce what we think jewelry can be and should be. Enamel as a material and a practice has and will continue to hold qualities that contribute to the field of jewelry and metalwork. It is very exciting to see work from all corners of the world where one material has gained a new momentum and its appearance has been adjusted to fulfill our needs from jewelry and metalwork today. To borrow a phrase from painting, enamel is not dead, it has many ways of occuring and that is clearly apparent in the jewelry and metalwork in EMAUX AT THIS MOMENT.»
