Florence LEHMANN « généa-logique »

Diplômée de l’Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg, Florence Lehmann (née en 1964 à Brumath et membre fondateur de l’Association Corpus) y enseigne aujourd’hui la création du bijou contemporain. Elle collabore aussi au cahier de tendances du CPDHBJO et a été nommée membre du Conseil des Métiers d’Art. Elle crée des collections pour différentes entreprises éditrices de bijoux. Ses pièces uniques, essentiellement en résine blanche – régulièrement exposées dans des galeries ou des musées – entretiennent par leur gestuelle, un rapport étroit avec le corps…  (Gal. The flesh of words,
A common thread in contemporary French jewellery

« Florence Lehmann ‘bejewels’ her life, dresses her jewellery. Once, as a young girl, head in the clouds, she transformed part of the sky into a brooch, a cut between two roofs. She shared this dream energy, this softness of the blue sky against the blues of the soul, that of metal as a mirror reflecting life. Then, she fell in love, and her work, with humour, puns, constantly narrated this link. From her happiness was born a little girl, Rosa-Lou. The thought process was once again moved; with maturity, the analysis is more subtle, blending maternity with the questioning of the creative process. Her artistic quests are those of all women, all mothers. Her jewellery touches because each one can find in them his or her own story. They are complicit jewellery, without a sophisticated image. Her assets do not change, she knows the communicative strength of colour, words and symbols.
Her colour is white, her penchant red. White is neutral and red acts as a contrast, with words giving the spirit. In this way, a large bracelet takes on consistency with its title: The empty is full (Le vide est un plein). The interior, the empty, is red, cut out in the form of a heart. Profiles of faces serve to describe human relationships, uncertainties. Tu me fais tourner la tête, a ring to turn people’s heads. The waltz, another to be balanced where two profiles face one other in a sceptical dilemma. On a bracelet, the profiles are linked by a red thread: the secret is in the look. The title sometime serves as a riddle or as a link between two elements: Today is a ring where the finger is placed between the inscription “tomorrow” and an old Egyptian medallion, for “yesterday”. The wearer becomes active, you oscillate Between, wisdom and passion, two earrings. The body is active, gestures participating in unveiling the sometimes hidden message. In this way, a ring where “yes” is written on one side and on the other “no”, reflecting the difficulty of speech or the desire of the day…Pushing the involvement of the body and the designer’s taste for words, one earring can only be read when reflected in a mirror.
From the first to all appearances
Why do we wear jewellery? To go out into the world as for the first time, to make us suitable to appear. From the link between this first appearance and the wearing of jewellery to appear, Florence Lehmann studies the mysteries of this.
Think of a ring, a bracelet, a necklace. To put it on, to make it exist, you put it on: and so it is born. Think of yourself, your arrival in this world, this first arrival, this first outing: and so you are born. The journey stops when the child’s head appears, stopped at the nose. Fl. Lehmann freezes time to take advantage of the moment and better understand the jewellery and its significance. The necklace, externally, round like an egg, carries within the silhouette of the wearer. Through necklaces of large pearls that can barely be put on, she translates the sensation of this. Certain pearls remind us of stylised bones, others round and particularly voluminous, like a belly, bear on a flat side the Mysteries of life: cellular divisions from the first three days in fresh and joyous colours. On others, the face is covered by the face of a child, masked by gold leaf, which fades with time. The mystery remains, you can never know everything about somebody, it is through contacts that the veil is lifted.
The internal drawing of the face is taken up again on a gold thread or silver chain, with the faces passing by one another, from one birth to another, between ancestors and children, the jewellery is a chain, a human chain, a genealogical chain. In this way, Fl. Lehmann goes back to our roots. On the bracelet, Noah, the descendants of the latter are enumerated. Its formal complexity takes up the symbolism again: the calligraphic link, in white latex, holds two shells, the mould for objects to come. Since 1998, Fl. Lehmann has been reflecting on the analogy between the plastic birth of shapes and that of men, between creation and procreation. Her colour, white, is participative here. “White, on our soul, acts like absolute silence… This silence is not dead, it overflows with possibilities for life…it is a nothing full of juvenile joy or, to put it better, a nothing before any birth, before any beginning”.

‘European Triennale for Contemporary Jewellery 2011‘, Anciens Abattoirs, Mons, Belgium

Major event in the world of contemporary jewelry design, this exhibition will provide to the public the creation of European artists who push the limits of the jewelry in a constant search for technical and formal innovations.

The concept of the Triennale is based on the invitation of the creators of two European countries to present their work in the company of creations by Belgian jewelers.

After the United Kingdom in 2002, Spain and Estonia in 2005 and Netherlands and Switzerland in 2008, this time Germany and Portugal are the invited countries of this fourth edition of the triennial. Their artists will compete with a selection of Belgian artists.
Sixty artists, chosen by German, Belgian and Portuguese curators, masters of art or young talents, will gather in the great Halle of the former slaughterhouses of Mons for one of the major events in the field of European contemporary jewellery.

Esthétique, formel, poétique ou polémique, le bijou contemporain a tous les visages.

Il est le reflet de son temps.

Par le travail des matières ou des symboles, par la recherche de l’épure ou l’abondance de détail, les créateurs repoussent les limites de cette discipline en perpétuelle mutation.

Derrière les créations les plus abouties se cachent des artistes à la recherche constante de perfection et d’innovation. Cette année encore, le WCC-BF vous propose de venir les découvrir lors de la Triennale européenne du Bijou contemporain.

Après la Grande Bretagne en 2002,l’Espagne et l’Estonie en 2005et les Pays-Bas et la Suisse en 2008, l’Allemagne et le Portugal sont les pays invités de cette quatrième édition de la triennale. Leurs créateurs se mesureront à une sélection d’artistes belges du nord et du sud du pays.

Michelle Kraemer and Maru Lopez present the final results after a yearlong development under the guidance of their tutor and curator. The work of both started with an exploration of gender, identity, sex, skin, touch, within the borders generated around those concepts by the individual and society.
The artists have worked in a close dialogue and with corresponding materials like fabric, latex, nylon and foam, but the resulting jewellery pieces show clearly their difference in cultural identity and personal interest.
Set up in the beautiful entrance hall of Alchimia, the exhibition is articulated in two installations referring to the display of ‘organic material’ , one related to commerce (the butcher) the other to curiosity and science (the natural history museum).«

«Cheveu un bijou !!!» hurle la Dame de Coeur

«!Tranchez-lui la tête!!! Cheveu un bijou!!!» hurle la Dame de Coeur, dans Alice …

mais … faut pas se faire de cheveux dans la vie !! ici, on est à un poil du bijou ….. si ce ne sont pas des bijoux au poil !!

Au-delà du dégoût que peut susciter l’emploi d’un tel matériau (à la « grande époque » du bijou en cheveux, à l’époque Victorienne, mode lancée par la très romantique Reine Victoria, cet engouement eu un grand succès dans les pays anglo-saxons mais suscita du dégoût et un certain rejet en France et dans le reste de l’Europe), ce n’est pas étonnant, à mon sens, qu’il suscite tant d’attrait parmi la jeune génération de bijoutiers : à force d’interroger le rapport du bijou au corps, le corps s’incorpore petit à petit au bijou lui-même.

« Contemporary art is getting hairy Long and silky; short and curly. Blond, brunette, red or grey. It’s hair and it has an important part in our perceptions of ourselves. It defines gender and visual identity, and is playing an important role lately in art — in jewelry, drawings or in mixed media pieces. Hair has long had a role in the work of artists and artisans. In the Victorian era, creating jewelry from hair became almost as popular as knitting or crocheting.  By using one’s own hair or that of a beloved family member women were able to design bracelets, chains, rings and earrings. Apart from jewelry, mourners would weave hair into decorative, memorial wall hangings. By the early 1900s using hair fell out of fashion. During the past 15 years, however, there’s been a fascination among contemporary artists using skin, nail clippings, urine and hair to create various forms of art. Fascinated with Victorian hair jewelry, artist and jewelry designer Melanie Bilenker has revived the art form. Like the Victorians who kept lockets of hair and miniature portraits painted with ground hair and pigment to secure the memory of a lost love, renders the « quiet minutes, the mundane, the domestic, the ordinary moments » from her own tresses. Bilenker observes various daily activities such as cleaning, bathing, dressing, resting or eating. She chronicles the private moments by setting the camera’s timer and goes about her business which can be anything such as eating chocolate, writing a note or enjoying a Saturday morning breakfast. Once she has the photographed images, Bilenker creates tracings of the forms within ghem with thousands of tiny strands of her own hair – which are eventually fixed in resin.  She meticulously layers several different drawings to give the appearance of depth, one as foreground, another as background.  The entire process takes the course of about a week of laying hairs, mixing resin, and then allowing it to cure.  Says Bilenker, « Once the hairs are set as line drawings within resin, I shape, smooth and polish the exterior.  I then fabricate the jewelry findings and set them.  The piece is then complete. »" (Courtesy Melanie Bilenker and Sienna Gallery)

« Puisant dans la tradition des bijoux en cheveux, matériau depuis longtemps collecté dans des foires et marchés ou dans l’intimité des familles pour devenir parure, Ana Goalabré se joue de cet usage en coupant une de ses mèches et en y taillant une bague qu’elle envoie à un homme accompagnée de la missive «J’aimerais tant passer mes doigts dans tes cheveux». Cette phrase, appel érotique d’un corps d’artiste, devient le titre d’une série déclinant divers contenus aimants et sensuels, traditionnellement gardés jusqu’alors implicites au nom d’une morale et d’une bienséance rigoureuse et qui tout à coup semblent avoir gagné le droit de dire clairement le désir, qu’il s’agisse de celui d’une mère, d’un père, d’une amante, d’un amant… et ce dans toute sa trivialité. Maria Ignacia Walker – MFA JEWELLERY AND BODY ORNAMENTS Alchimia contemporary jewellerySchool 2013 – 2015 –   A simple fact of life that María Ignacia Walker obsesses over: The shedding of hair. The obsession – losing them, collecting them, ordering them, measuring them and archiving them. The desire – to preserve these losses – It gives rise to “transcendieron”.  The discourse is not about beauty and it is not about sensuality, not even about cultural symbols that hair carries.  How much hair do you lose constantly, everyday ? How many pieces grow out of your body and die every moment ?  “The transcendents” are a homage to the moments when you lose your hair. Captured and immortalized in the fragility of the porcelain, they give perpetuity and freeze all their expressions in the moment of their detachment from the body. With a threading method, the artist uses horsehair as connectors. They show the lightness, energy and freedom, while demonstrating the real, natural movement of the hair. Together with the act of keeping and protecting the hair in a porcelain form, they are given another life that keeps them present through their absence.
