EXPO ‘Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker’ – Caroline Van Hoek gallery, Bruxelles (BE) – 4-23 Aout 2012

« Butcher, Baker, Candlestick maker »   – Caroline Van Hoek gallery  (Brussels, Belgium)  04-Aug-2012 – 23-Aug-2012

A project generously hosted by Caroline Van Hoek gallery to promote young work in contemporary jewelry. Works by Cranbrook Academy of Art, USA.
The breakdown of material-specific practice is an opportunity to acknowledge and re-engage the long-standing culture of borrowing within the maker’s studio. This exhibition examines the loss in reducing our identity as makers from goldsmiths, silversmiths, blacksmiths, and whitesmiths to generalized “metalsmiths” and the gain in casting lines to outside archetypes as concepts continue to override materials in our collective system of making. Now, in addition to our traditional practices, we are dissecting carcasses, hanging cuts to cure, greasing our molds, kneading and salting our dough, dipping and re-dipping our waxes in order to glean foreign phrases from exterior societal crafts whose methods increase the potency of our own.

EXPO ‘Ultrabody’ – Milano (IT) – 19 Avril-17 Juin 2012

Ultrabody – 208 opere tra arte e design

EXPO 'Ultrabody' - Milano (IT) - 19 Avril-17 Juin 2012 dans Beatrice BROVIA (IT) copertina-catalogo

ULTRABODY. 208 WORKS FROM ART TO DESIGN, a thematic exhibition devoted to the influence exerted by the human body on contemporary creativity, ranging from art to design, but also taking in architecture, furniture, the applied arts, fashion and jewellery.
Curated by Beppe Finessi, promoted by the City of Milan Department of Culture, Fashion and Design, brought about together with Peugeot and organised by Civita, the exhibition shows a rich selection of works by leading names on the international design and visual arts scene that, starting from the “body”, manage to involve such other disciplines as contemporary anthropology, sociology, costume, society, technology and aesthetics.
Devised by Peter Bottazzi, the exhibition experience is organised in three macro thematic groups, one in each of the Sforza Castle’s Visconti Rooms: Alluding to the Body, Humouring the Body, Overcoming the Body.
The graphic identity for Ultrabody is the work of Leonardo Sonnoli, the internationally celebrated graphic designer and winner of an ADI Compasso d’Oro Award in 2011, who created a new custom font for the event, calibrated to match the topics expressed by the works selected.

Alluding to the Body, from representation to metaphor features some venerable icons…… Here, visitors can also find bracelets with traces and body prints by the maestro of contemporary jewellery Gerd Rothmann, the enigmatic proposals by Iris Eichenberg and Bruno Munari’s Talking Forks that repeat the gestures we habitually make with our hands, transmuting from tools for eating into elements of communication.

Humouring the Body, from form to function contains works that take their starting point from correctly matching the needs expressed in an object’s use to giving it the right form, suggesting possible new relations between those objects and the body : like (for jewelry) gloves/jewels by the group Bless, or Matteo Ragni’s Patch bookmark-ring for De Vecchi, which readers can use to keep the book they are reading open with just one hand.

Overcoming the Body hosts the more experimental designs and works, including several that are irreverent and even provocative, capable of leaving visitors with an uncanny, disturbed feeling. These range from Naomi Filmer’s many experiments with the idea of original jewellery, to the crash helmet-monitors designed by James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau, which play with the principle of identity between partners to a dialogue, a variety of body ornaments created by Imme van der Haak

This collar which alludes to human entrails is one of the first works by Beatrice Brovia in the world of designer jewellery. Her steps are sure and definite, and show no trace of the prevailing conformity. Her careful reflections are expressed as visually striking ornaments to be worn.

Bringing together conceptual modes and formal value: in these sculptures to be worn, the modules which make up the collar have
been designed around a face, thus establishing a close emotional relationship between the jewel and the body wearing it.

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

Manfred Bischoff

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

Tabea Reulecke: Solo ExhibitionATTA Gallery (Bangkok, Thailand) -
19 Fevr-15 Mars 2011
2011 is the year of the rabbit. So what could be more fitting for gallery ATTA than to start off the exhibition season by showcasing the work by Tabea Reulecke ?

Tabea Reulecke (Germany, 1981)
Tabea completed a Diploma in Gem and Jewellery design, Idar-Oberstein, 2006. Since 2007 she has been an assistant at Idar-Oberstein. She has participated in a number of workshops at the ravary workshop, also with Uta Feiler, Peter Skubic, and Beate Klockmann. She has lectured and held workshops in Germany and Estonia. Tabea has held solo exhibitions at Gallery Marzee and Gallery Caroline van Hoek and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Estionia, Australia, Netherlands, Uk and Germany. She won the Graduation Prize, Gallery Marzee 07/08. (« Pieces of Eight Gallery » blog)

« The rabbit is running like a fool, he will stumble over his own paws any moment now. The brooch as cartoon. What’s he up to, where’s he going to? The expression is his eye is one of joy and excitement, the colours of the brooch are fresh. Speed, movement and joy are somehow synonymous. The faster the music the more cheerful it is. Inertia, depression is often synonymous with standing still, motionless, frozen. Music is slow, tones are low. That is how you feel when totally sad, depressed and knocked down. You can’t move, you feel locked up in your own body and sorrow. The moment you start moving energy returns. Movement, speed is freedom.
Tabea’s depiction of a rabbit having fun fits in a tradition that is age-old. On an early antique Egyptian painting on papyrus a lion and an antelope play senet, a board game. The lion moves his pawn laughing in victory, the antelope is beaten. In jewellery from ancient times onwards animals are depicted, sometimes having a symbolic meaning but also used in a decorative way. In art and literature the use of animals is a way to reflect on human behaviour. By mirroring ourselves with the help of animals we are able to reflect and to laugh about ourselves. Tabea’s rendering of an animal in action is not a common theme. But it is a perfect expression of speed, fun and excitement. »

« For my works I mainly use natural materials, rarely artificial ones like plastic for example. I create my own world with them. Certain materials happen to become synonyms of other words so that there is a story that you can only read if you know the necessary vocabulary.
When I’m watching myself, I realize that I don’t consist of only one material either. I’m soft and hard, warm and cold, wet and dry … My jewellery comes out of my inner self where there are many more differences.
Nothing there is only on the surface. » (Tabea Reulecke)
