Opening March 9th from 18:00

(71) gold on the tracks - Gigi Mariani

Gigi Mariani uses antique goldsmith techniques such as niello and granulation in order to give his work a distinctive character. The preciousness of the metal disappears, leaving a dark, rough surface. His almost black looking pieces achieve some kind of mystery.

« Gold and black, cracks and overlapped slabs and a search for a contrast. A golden point that stands out on a niello surface; the cracks that split the geometry and force it in other, different directions.«

(71) gold on the tracks - gigi Mariani

« My feelings, my moods, my emotions and the metal contortions are the elements that characterize my own research. The thrill of a crack or the vertigo of an empty space push me to force the technique until getting unexpected results. » Gigi Mariani

PAST PRESENT
The Grammar of Jewellery

 Maria Rosa Franzin
Gigi Mariani

Alternatives gallery - Opening 12th November – at 6pm

Online exhibition:   www.no-gram.com

PAST PRESENT

Just as language is a set of rules that represent the culture and the way of life of a people, in the same way jewellery is a set of conventions which are also an expression of a vision that is characteristic of a nation. For both, it is a constant interplay and alternation of rules, conventions and customs that come from the past to describe the present. Jewellery is a language and as such is alive insofar as it represents the people who use it. This exhibition aims to focus on the many forms of expression through jewellery. The two goldsmith artists presented, with different personal and professional backgrounds, are however both interpreters of that way of thinking and feeling that is typical of the Italian culture. Italy has always been a melting pot where past and future are fused together, where tradition and innovation are in dialogue, often generating conflicts that can open up new avenues. The rediscovery of ancient techniques and skillful use of existing construction methods characterize the work of Maria Rosa Franzin and Gigi Mariani. Their works show the peculiarities of the Italian language, different for rules and concepts from that of other countries. In other words, we could say « I speak jewellery ».

Past/Present

« Maria Rosa Franzin, who is part of the School of Padua, remains faithful to the use of traditional materials typical of the jewellery world, such as gold and silver, even if with the introduction of colour in recent years. In her latest works, a three-dimensionality already present in the past is accentuated, made of hidden, personal interior spaces. They are introspective works that reveal strength and fragility, light and shadow, presenting a double, inner and outer space, in dialogue with the surrounding world. These are intimate and individual spaces that the artist chooses to share. The introduction of rapid and intense signs, along with the choice of colour, suggest a state of mind. These traces take on the ideal value of an experience, a memory, an emotion. »

Past/PresentMaria Rosa Franzin

« Gigi Marianis works express a strong primordial nature, determined by the skillful use of niello, a technique once used extensively in Europe in the Middle Ages as an inlay on engraved or etched metal. Mariani has personalized this skill by completely covering the surface of the metal with this mixture, as if to conceal the underlying preciousness. His work evokes the earth’s crust attacked by the elements. The forms are linear, compact, in spite of being irregular, and express a great force, while maintaining a significant sense of proportion and balance. »

SOFA Chicago 2016 – Special Exhibits : Art and Wine: Gioielli in Fermento – 3-6 Nov. 2016

 SOFA Chicago
2016 Special Exhibits :  Art and Wine  Gioielli in Fermento

Gioielli in Fermento at SOFA Chicago 2016

Gioielli in Fermento is an international exhibition project and award for contemporary studio jewelry. Starting from the landscapes of Italy in the winemaking region of Emilian hills, it opens its borders, inviting established and emerging artists from every country to express their relation with the wine world. Inspiration, dedication, experience, research, innovation, observation, choice, challenge: these are all elements of the creative approach that we can use to focus both on the activities of a jewellery artist or those of a winemaker. Both a piece of jewellery or a sip of wine are evocative of the individual interpretation of the raw material chosen by their maker. In both cases, the aim is turning the natural into something precious and unique.
Since 2011, six editions including more than 300 artists and their works have been presented under the selection of an international board of advisors in the field, with the kind collaboration of AGC Italian Contemporary Jewelry Association, Charon Kransen Arts, Klimt02 network, Joya Barcelona and Torre Fornello Winery.
A collection of work from the 2016 edition with a selected number of iconic pieces from previous editions will be presented in this Special Exhibit.

Presented by Gioielli in Fermento, Ziano Piacentino, Italy; curated by Eliana Negroni, curator, Gioielli in Fermento.

I would like to tell here all my admiration for the energy and all the efforts & work done by Eliana Negro,i ! APPLAUSE !!!

The project is the testimony of repeating ornamental motives, decorative ornaments and similar textures by juxtaposing pieces of artistic jewellery and paintings taken directly from the modernist period, is comparing two forms of artistic expression different time and space come together harmoniously together.
An artistic dialogue, confluence of ideas, patterns, colors and textures among the paintings of the Catalan Modernist painter Ramón Casas and art jewelry pieces of 10 renowned artists worldwide.

 Melting Point Valencia 2016

Passion Bijou(x). Colección Marianne Gassier de Joyería Contemporánea. Galería del Tossal. Plaça del Tossal, Barri de Carme, València. (Con la colaboración del Ajuntament de València):

My contemporary jewelry collection in an exhibition !!!

Thanks to Antonio Sánchez García and to all the EASD Valencia team, what was dreamed two years ago after drinking some « Valencia’s water » (not water at all ….. ;-) …) will become reality very soon …..
About 80 jewels from my collection (brooches, neckpieces, bracelets) in 4 themes (« Black envy« , « All Whites« , « Get the Blues » and « Red (thread) » will be displayed, separated by a stream of  about 60 rings …… Was VERY hard to do a choice (galeria Tossal is not big …) !!!

Of course jewels by the « better » actual jewellers (Christophe Burger, Sébastien Carré, Edu Tarin (Talente Prize 2016), François Pereña, Patricia Lemaire, Marianne Anselin, Teresa Faris, Maria Rosa Franzin, Philip Sajet, Noon Passama, Jorge Manilla, Gaetano Pesce, Gigi Mariani, Liana Pattihis, Marta Mattsson, Ramon Puig Cuyas , etc etc ……..) but also by all the youngs newly graduates  (my favourite field of investigations !  ….) from the better jewelry schools (Alchimia in Italy, Idar Oberstein in Germany, Massana in Spain, Afedap or HEAR in France, Suny New Palz in USA …..).

I’m VERY proud &  filled with emotion to share my choices and to give back to these jewellers, I hope, the pleasure they gave me.

The exhibition, titled « PASSION BIJOU(x) », will be held in Galeria Tossal, Valencia (Spain) from April 21 to May 22 2016, during the MELTING POINT jewelry event that occurs every two years in the city of Valencia.
