Chain Reactions: Claartje Keur’s jewellery and portraits  :exhibition in Museum Coda Apeldoorn untill 30 March 2014  – 70 Necklaces from the collection Claartje Keur.

What started with a few silver chains and pendants in the 1970s, grew into a unique collection of jewellery. Claartje Keur (1938) has been collecting jewellery for over thirty years, specialising in neck jewellery. From 30 January until 30 March 2014 CODA Museum exhibits seventy necklaces from her collection. The exhibition combines this neck jewellery with the photo portraits of designers Claartje Keur made over the years.

Claartje Keur started her jewellery collection by buying a brooch designed by Sita Falkena from gallery Ra in Amsterdam in 1983. Three years later this was followed by a necklace and bracelet by Emmy van Leersum, and in 1990 Keur made her first big neck jewellery purchase. In 1998, her collection consisted of thirty necklaces made by renowned jewellery designers. Today, the collection encompasses seventy pieces of neck jewellery from the best-known artists and jewellery designers.
Claartje Keur’s interest in neck jewellery goes back to her students days (Technical College, chemical technology) when she was given a necklace with a wrought-iron pendant in the shape of a small man. This pendant comforted her in difficult times. According to Keur, neck jewellery does not only act as a talisman, it also poses a challenge to both the maker and the wearer. How does it sit on the body? How does it change your aura?
Even though her collection now consists of more than seventy necklaces, collecting was not Keur’s original aim. “I did make a very conscious decision to spend money on jewellery, but at first it was mainly out of interest. You simply turn into a collector at a certain point; usually when others describe you as such.” Buying jewellery is a matter of taste, preference, personal contacts, and of course budget. Keur is interested in modern art and photography and has a preference for neck jewellery designed by artists who have graduated from Dutch academies. Diversity of materials was also an important factor. Keur: “I buy from as many artists as possible, in as many (unusual) materials as possible. I abhor ‘things on strings’, and I am not all that keen on gold.” The Chain Reactions exhibition in CODA Museum shows how each purchase is a reaction to the previous jewel, and predicts elements, shapes or materials in the next piece.

Next Jeneration / Jewellery Talent Contest 2014 -3nd edition

Fiera di Vicenza S.p.A., with the scientific advice of the School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano, publishes an International Contest dedicated to ideas of young talents under 30.

Fiera di Vicenza S.p.A. believes in young people and the Contest is an essential scouting tool to identify and promote new talents in the international gold scenario. The theme of the 2014 Contest is the Design of a Sentimental Jewel, understood as a jewel to celebrate the most important moments of human life and feelings, from love to mourning, from memory to loss. The inspirations for the Sentimental Jewellery may relate to materials, shapes, processings, symbols, traditions and customs of the past or of the present, capable to transfer to the jewel sentimental and commemorative values.

The deadline for submitting the Designs is 28 February 2014.

The Award Ceremony will take place in May 2014 at VICENZAORO Spring

Bringing together almost 200 objects from around the world, Unexpected Pleasures celebrates the work of contemporary jewellers who have challenged the conventions of jewellery design.

Curated by jewellery designer and maker Dr. Susan Cohn, the exhibition offers a survey of contemporary jewellery presented through a number of themes: Worn Out – celebrating the experience of wearing jewellery, Linking Links – looking at the ways in which meaning and narratives are expressed in jewellery and A Fine Line – offering insights into the origins of contemporary jewellery today, highlighting key instigators of the contemporary jewellery movement.

The exhibition will feature prominent UK and international jewellers including Wendy Ramshaw, renowned for her complex geometric designs, Hans Stofer’s intricate wire form jewellery, Gijs Bakker’s conceptual adornments and delicate abstract pieces by Dorothea Pruhl.

 »Everything here is designed to be worn, » said guest curator and jewellery designer Susan Cohn.
Visitors took that as a challenge, moving through 180 dimly lit curiosities by the world’s most radical designers, trying to imagine what it would be like to wear a necklace of glass and ceramic dildos. Or a tubular  »veil » collar like a pearly plastic version of Ned Kelly’s helmet. Or a cluster of rusted bolts and nails on a silver  »Screw Ring ».
»After procreation and survival, our next instinct as humans is adornment, » Cohn said when asked,  »Why? »
 »Adornment is about attracting a mate, which in turn, is about procreation and survival. »
Some humans, however, obviously require more complex, intellectual adornments than others.  »Yes, some wearers will want something that speaks that way for them, » Cohn said. Among the exhibits was a vast choice of such expression, from the minimalist exquisitry of a grey sunray-pleated yoke, to a clump of small pale  »tumours », photographed bursting through a model’s frock. The latter was in a category of radical ideas.
NGV director Gerard Vaughan said the exhibition offered  »a fresh view of the many meanings associated with jewellery ».
The visiting director of London’s Design Museum, Deyan Sudjic, said it was the result of a  »long, drawn-out, cerebral process », and that is precisely how it felt.
Unexpected Pleasures: The Art and Design of Contemporary Jewellery, is a Design Museum, London, exhibition funded by the Joan and Peter Clemenger Trust.
It is free and runs until August 26, when it will travel to London. (Daily Life.com.au)

Unexpected Pleasures looks at what we mean by jewellery from a number of different perspectives.  Taking as its starting point the radical experiments of the Contemporary Jewellery Movement that challenged a conventional understanding of the language of personal adornment, and looking instead at the essential meanings of jewellery, the exhibition brings together important work from around the world, and looks at it from the point of view of the wearer as well as the maker. Contemporary  Jewellery in this sense is at the intersection of art and design.

Curated by Dr. Susan Cohn for the Design Museum, London with exhibition design by Ab Rogers Design and graphics by Barnbrook.

THE RING – the most common piece of jewellery can be full of meaning, a personal statement sometimes showing itself as a technical miracle or purely decorative and beautiful. It can demand attention, be an invitation to play, be filled with tears and secrets – and is to be worn for one day or for ever.
In homage to the ring Galleri Hnoss has invited all the jewellery artists exhibited in the gallery since the start in 1997 to produce one ring each. The result is now to be seen in the exhibition THE RING – jewel forever. The show consisting of over one hundred rings is a vibrant collection of different expressions, thoughts and forms

In connection with the exhibition on September 9 we are also arranging aseminar : The Ring – jewel forever. The theme is the ring seen from different perspectives. We are very proud to announce the speakers: Anna Schetelich from Galerie Oona, Germany, Professor Otto Kunzli, Germany, and Manuel Vilhena, jewellery artist from Portugal. Moderator is Love Jönsson, crafts critic and guest lecturer at HDK, University of Gothenburg. The seminar is a collaboration between Galleri Hnoss and the Department of Jewellery Art at HDK, with support from Gothenburg Crafts Association, Estrid Ericsson’s Foundation, Wilhelm and Martina Lundgren Fund, and the family Wikanders Foundation.

EXPO ‘The Spirit of Stone’ – South-Karelia Museum, Lappeenranta (Finland) – 8 Mai 2011-8 Janv 2012

The Spirit of Stone event will bring to Lappeenranta an exhibition, 
workshops and lectures, related to stones and jewellery. Theme of the event is the spirit, mythic and power of the stone. The Spirit of Stone 
is organized in cooperation with Kalevala Jewelry
 (Kalevala Koru) and South-Karelia Museum.The exhibition called The Spirit of Stone will present the prehistory of the stone and some of the best works from the international competition for art jewelry students.The exhibition also includes an invitation exhibition for jewelry artists around the world and a stone jewellery exhibition of Kalevala Koru.

Workshop : Helena Lehtinen: Cameo
Cameo is a traditional piece of jewellery which has its origins in seals.
 During history it has been in and out of fashion in courts in Europe. Nowdays it is usually a red-white silhuet of a lady, most often worn by eldery ladies.
Reflecting to what this classical piece of jewellery has been in the past, students will search cameo´s meaning today. 
What it has been, what it could be? Is there any significancy left, what it could present in today´s society / to today´s people?
 What is your cameo? 
With new materials and way of working students will create new traditions in cameos. 
Working with stone is possible in the workshop.

Decouverte : « IGOJA » group of jewelers

IGOJA, an International Group Of Jewellery Artists, is a group of jewellery artist friends.
It all began in Cologne in the studio of Marlene Gerhard, where some of us came together to work and exchange ideas ending up with an exhibition in private atmosphere at art minded friends. It was stimulating to see your colleagues working, experimenting with materials expressing their ideas, learning from one another, and also a reflection for oneself. The passion and enthusiasm, as well as the struggle, and how to manifest this in the jewellery art field is a common point of recognition. We decided to make our group internationally stronger and invited some respected colleagues to join
the group.
The represented nationalities of the six jewellery artists in IGOJA are German, Dutch, English and Portuguese. Our purpose is to share our passion, to visit inspiring places together, and to exchange in workshops and to exhibit.

Our first public presentation with the complete group will take place in Galleria Reverso in Lisbon in
September 2010.Serendipity, chance favours the prepared mind was the title of this exhibition.


A brief introduction of the IGOJA members:

Marlene Gerhard, from Germany, lives and works in Cologne in an old fire-station. She is trained as a goldsmith and jewellery maker in Idar-Oberstein, which is well known for its traditional jewellery industries and precious and non precious stones. After two years of working as a contract goldsmith she was slightly disappointed by the kind of work she was expected to do and started studying law for several years. However, the moment she came into contact with some inspiring jewellery artists who introduced her to several workshops, a completely new approach towards creating jewellery, her love for what she once started was back again. Suddenly everything made sense: she started to work again with different materials to create jewellery that is typical hers. Marlene has a very monumental approach which makes her work sculptural but this monumentality has lightness by its playfulness and humour.

Hiltje Wynia, from the Netherlands has a studio in a Frisian village, Oudemirdum. She decided on a later age to develop her creativity in this field and began her studies in the Sculpture Department of the Academy of Art in Maastricht, but found out soon that the Jewellery Department suited her better. Suited is the right word, because Hiltje has a very developed sense for textile, clothes and jewelleryAfter her study she went back to her Frisian base in the north of the Netherlands where she created a series of jewellery made with and inspired by old traditional Dutch lace. Lace and the nature of the Frisian landscape, her love for gardening, all those things surrounding her makes an idea growing into her mind. Through the working process and a sometimes chaotic experimental struggle with materials the final outcome can be surprising in the end. These creative processes are what keep her love for making jewellery constantly evolving.

Suzanne Esser, from the Netherlands, has her studio in Amsterdam in a former Hospital, now used by
artists.  Suzanne grew up in an artistic surrounding; her father was sculptor and her mother a painter. She did choose for studying jewellery at the Academy of Art in Arnhem where she was taught by the famous Dutch designer Gijs Bakker. She developed a clear way of thinking and her jewellery is often based on form interventions. Her idea behind the piece is more important as its suitability as a wearable piece of jewellery but because of her love for repetition and regular rhythm her large necklaces are flexible and therefore by their very nature wearable. Her inspiration can come from elements of machinery; letting them grow as nature does; evolving into new spatial and monumental creations.

Susan Cross from England lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she teaches in the Jewellery& Silversmith Department at Edinburgh College of Art. Susan completed her study in art and design with a degree in jewellery at Middlesex Polytechnic in London. Following her graduation she was invited to teach part-time and has since this time paralleled her own practise with teaching, thus allowing her the freedom and the so needed financial support in
this field. To be able to work alongside students she experiences is a privilege and an inspiration. Exchange programs brought her to several Asiatic countries where besides her teaching she could explore the culture. Recent inspiration from a visit to Korea include: exotic tied bundles of twisted roots to sacks full of dried flower heads and visiting temples in the wilds of the Korean mountains, she documents her travels with photography and sketches. In the studio she develops her collated research by drawing, abstracting, collage and three-dimensional models to develop and refine her jewellery.
Susan’s work is as a big gesture in which you can find a resonance between her love for constructed textiles and textural details.

Paula Crespo, from Portugal, has her studio behind her Galeria Reverso in Lisbon. Having the feeling to live several lives, she dedicated her soul to jewellery since the eighties, both as a gallerist and as an artist. She has a degree of the Faculdade de Letras and taught at state schools until a few years ago. She is trained as a jeweller at Ar.Co in Lisbon, where she later taught jewellery design for some years. During ten years she ran the gallery/workshop ‘Arte facto 3’ together with two other colleagues. In 1998 she started up a gallery of her own to follow her individual path, and Galeria Reverso was born. A gallery and a studio on one location, making national and international exhibitions, training students, giving courses and making work of her own. Paula’s life is her love for art jewellery, being an important link in the development of Portuguese contemporary jewellery. In spite of her feeling to have a constant lack of time she developed her own work in an interesting way, even though it may seem she jumps over a period of time, her work has always a clear monumental construction. Her ideas ‘dance’ and then settle in her mind, and when it is time to come out she feels it is worth the development. Sometimes her jewellery is build up with thousands of little rings to form a flexible whole. Only
passion can be the motivation behind these achievements.

Birgit Laken, from the Netherlands, has her studio in the centre of Haarlem with a view on her garden. She studied drawing at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Finding out that the direct way of expressing in drawing and painting was not the right way for her, she decided to do a second art study on the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam to become a jewellery artist. Working with metal and other materials required a complete different approach, having an idea, making a plan first, finding out how to treat the material, that indirect way of expressing enabled her to channel and express her passion. Being a spontaneous character she is always in search of balance which is reflected in her jewellery. Her work can be very clear, restrained and sober, but also it can be playful, particularly when expressed through colour. Birgit often develops her work through a themed project which can evolve and grow over a period of time; this takes her to a deeper understanding of the source that inspired her.

COUP de COEUR ! Caroline Broadhead

Caroline Broadhead studied jewelry in London with such distinguished artists as Wendy Ramshaw, Gijs Bakker, and Emmy van Leersum. A visit to East Africa in the late 1970s encouraged her to create jewelry that responded to the form of the body. By the mid 1980s, her constructions had become increasingly removed from jewelry as she concentrated on conceptual aspects of clothing and installation art. Since 1978, Broadhead has taught textiles, jewelry, ceramics, and other disciplines at Brighton Polytechnic, Middlesex University, and Goldsmiths College, University of London.

« In the 70s and 80s, I was exploring ideas about jewellery, the way it could be handled, change on or off the body etc, ideas that were best expressed through materials of a certain colour, weight or flexibility. I made work out of coloured cotton threads and rope and my tufted bracelets used very fine nylon threads. And as my ideas were developing, I became more interested in the non-precious materials, ones that did not have a recent history in jewellery. By the mid 1980s I was making much larger scale pieces in woven nylon – veils, collars and sleeves. This scale was exciting as it allowed me to examine a spatial awareness around the body in a new way. For example, the Necklace/Veil was woven out of nylon line. It married something that you could wear round the neck with something you could also twist up to become a veil. It became a screen to look through to the wearer, or for the wearer to look back, as much as something to look at. These larger pieces that covered more of the body led me to clothing forms which gave me greater scope to express ideas about the whole person. These were not fashion but there didn’t seem to be a particular category for my pieces to be located, except art. »

« How important is function in your work?
Jewellery made me consider the fit and use of objects on the body in a practical way, but the function of my pieces has been to give the viewer or wearer a particular experience, or to start a train of thought. When I started making garments in the 80s they were wearable – even if they didn’t look it. The function of wearability was not my aim, the important thing was that there was a possibility that they could be worn. They were a way of exploring and expressing ideas. Clothing as art was an area in its infancy in the 80s.
So if function is no longer relevant, what are you trying to do with your garments?
I used the garments, and subsequent work, to explore notions about a person. The first shirts I made gave form to the gestures a garment makes you do when you put it on. For example Wraparound Shirt makes you ‘put the other arm in’, you keep repeating that gesture to put it on. But I also wanted to create pieces that had a strong visual impact when they weren’t being worn. In my work with dance, gesture and movement are also important. I have created dresses that direct the dancer’s movements and set the scene for these movements.
Can you explain your attraction to textiles?
I started working with textiles before I realised that that was what I was doing. Most of my work is working with textiles, or about textiles. I like the fact we are surrounded by it in various forms, its feel, and what it does. I enjoy the sense of touch. It’s an amazing manufactured material which you then add your manufacturing process to – often you meet the material in this half-way position. « This catalogue is of an exhibition of Caroline Broadhead’s, whose work at this time was inspired by having taken up embroidery in Kenya. Using the practice of wooden hoops for tensioning the material, she used laminated wood and the industrial nylon monofilament which she colour-dyed and utilised in this body of work. Work which was of a playful and colourful yet rigorous and controlled nature fashioned into bracelets, necklaces and brooches. These became canonical works in the repertoire of one of the five major presences in British New Jewellery : Caroline Broadhead, Pierre Degen, Susanna Heron, Julia Manheim, and David Watkins. »

In her early pieces she employed flexible nylon monofilament structures that could be collapsed to form a neckpiece, pulled up to form a ruff effect or even expanded to cover the face and head (e.g. neckpiece/veil, 1983; see Dormer and Turner, pl. 161). She also used multi-coloured woven flax for broad hooped necklaces and bracelets (e.g. tufted necklace, 1979; see Houston, pl. 12). The range of plain and coloured acrylic jewellery produced by C&N Buttons & Jewellery Production, a company she formed in London in 1978 with Nuala Jamison (b 1 Oct 1948), had a broader appeal. In her work Broadhead proposed new functions for materials and techniques, going beyond the idea of a unique item of value, to fuse clothing and decorative accessories in a complete and imaginative ensemble. In the 1980s she created a new mood with elusive body garments: Cocoon, Seam (both 1986) and Web (1989; all London, Crafts Council Gal.) are cotton and nylon fabrics that, once wrapped, form surreal patterns that play on an ambiguity between clothing and personality. Broadhead has been recognized as a leading innovator in the New Tradition tendency in Europe, a generation of designers who, over two decades into the 1980s, revised many of jewellery’s conventions.
