The annual Marzee International Graduation Show, is the highlight of our exhibition calendar, and has grown from a modest affair to an event unparallelled in size and scope. This year’s show will present a selection of jewellery and objects by more than 100 graduates from 40 different art schools and academies from Europe, US, Asia and Australia.
Galerie Marzee is unique in its support for emerging young talent and since 1986 the Marzee International Graduate Show has offered the best new graduates their first opportunity to exhibit in a world-renowned gallery. During the opening we will also award the Marzee Graduate Prize to this year’s most promising students.
Bringing together student works from all over the globe, Galerie Marzee’s graduate exhibition is the only of its kind. It serves as an annual survey of thesis research in the field of jewellery, but more importantly, as a venue for these investigations, questions, and queries to come to light. Indeed, with contributions from over 40 academies and colleges across the world, design and process are as varied as there are selected works. As these students transition from the structure provided by university jewellery departments into a studio practice of their own making, the opportunity for their first body of work to continue into the contemporary conversation is significant. Perfectly housed within the gallery, the Marzee International Graduate Show 2017 marks the 31st installment, and the only jewellery degree exhibition of this size and scope.
The exhibition will be on show through October 25th.

TROPHIES // IN THE REIGN OF COYOTE
The hunt is a ritual; through gathering, searching, and collecting we create amulets, myths, and trophies. The works of these jewelers are rooted in these traditions; they look to nature and translate what they see.To hunt is to gather, to search, to collect. Through hunting, making, the weaving of stories, we are able to resist modernity’s denial of belief, and to keep our ties with the natural world. There is a primal, universal longing for myth, for an understanding of the immeasurable power of nature, and an allure in conquering, transforming, becoming. The hunt is a ritual, a way to insert ourselves into an ages-old cycle. In hunting we take on the role of maker, turning one thing into another. In making we are shamans, translating worlds, perspectives, identity.These jewelers distinguish themselves through their sensitive treatment of nature. Their work utilizes the material language of the trophy through the use of animal imagery and materials. The transformations they wrought, and the stories they weave, set them apart from other makers and unify them through aesthetic and conceptual application. In the Reign of Coyote references a collection of stories about the earth’s becoming, fables of animal and human relationships. The work of these artists looks back to a time when we, as humans, turned directly to nature for guidance, sustenance, and support.

Jane Dodd works in metal, wood, bone, shell and makes pieces that investigate storytelling and narrative. She is particularly interested in exploring a dialogue between nature and culture.

  Märta Mattsson « Märta Mattsson   sees beauty in things that other people find strange or are even repulsed by. She becomes fascinated when there is something you do not want to see and by the feeling you get when you do not want to look at something, yet you still do.  Tanel Veenre  Tanel Veenre ‘s jewels take one on a journey that starts from the depths of the sea, continues on through coral reefs, past dancing sea horses and then on to the cultivation of silkworms. The voyage ends in a cosmic cloud.

Her research interests include the interaction between craft and industry, between unique and serial with a particular focus on (re)production, digital technology, tactility, the behaviour of materials and the subjective role of the maker. In her recent series, Hunacturing, Langendries is questioning the nature of reproduction via a combination of natural materials, mechanical treatment and the human touch.

 he grew up in the West Desert (USA) where he developed a close relationship to the natural world. His work is invested in material and myth, both cultural and personal. Through the building of these myth he creates artifacts and amulets of The Tribe

Anna Talbot’s jewellery is inspired by fairy tales, nursery rhymes, songs and stories. Wolves, deer, trees, forests and Little Red Riding Hood are all central elements in her universe, and they don’t necessarily stick to their traditional roles.

« A beautiful piece of jewellery is exciting. Excitement is a quality that comes into being upon collapse of the quantifiable and measurable into the inexplicable and personal. Fleeing from gold-edged emptiness binds the artist’s soul with the thing being created. It’s all somehow wordlessly conspiratorial. Artist and jewellery become witnesses to a crime in which they are both complicit.
Anxiety may contain embarrassment and brazenness, mockery levelled at the opinion of the court.

A talented jeweller says: The quality of the jewel is in its intellectuality. For an artist the jewel is something very personal through which he can express his concerns, feelings, ideas.
Veenre likes to combine metal with such a natural details like rope or coal (back to the Stone Age?). He makes historical collars out of shining fish-scales, which he strings together with little glass beads. As a result his work looks very fine with its dynamics, femininity and grace. It is experimental and theatrical, there is a fine sense of drama inside. »

 Daniela Cardillo has been shortlisted for this year’s European Prize for Applied Arts – Young Talent, and her work will go on display from 14 July to 9 September in Belgium. She will find out next week if she has won an award.
« Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Daniella explained that her work isn’t about shock value; instead, it is about creating something beautiful.
“It’s great – I’ve been really busy lately,” said Cardillo of her nomination. She has recently returned from London, where she met with retailers to discuss the possibility of selling her work in stores.
Since graduating last year, she has met with an enterprise board and taken a ‘start your own business’ course, while working on getting funding together to set up her own studio.
She hopes to have her online store up and running next week and is working on creating pieces that are less labour-intensive and more affordable than her previous work. » (thejournal.ie)

« I am concerned with finding beauty in and making use of death and discard.I’m intrigued by the components that make up a creature. When an animal dies, these parts loose their sense of function, and can then be studied and appreciated for their true aesthetics.
Taxidermy, hunting trophies and the concept of the animal as a status and power symbol, is also at the root of my work. If bones, skulls, claws, and hair are considered memento-mori, the pieces are not a simple reminder of death, but an alteration of it, vitalizing past life fragments.

The exhibition ‘Patro(o)n’ gives consideration to daily rituals, compositions, work grinds and other patterns. At the same time this exhibition about contemporary jewellery provides a platform to see “free of any pattern”.

The world is full of life and organisms that thrive in a multitude of ways. From the seemingly mundane to the flat-out bizarre, « things » have found a way to survive. People are both part of the living world, and manipulators of it. An ever-changing world and life’s ability to adapt is the theme for this exhibition. The work presented shows a reverence for these creatures, the inner spark that ignites life, and the ability to survive.

Curator Daniel DiCaprio talks about this year’s exhibition at Quirk Gallery (on Art Jewelry Forum) :

« Sparkle Plenty is the annual jewelry exhibition put on by Quirk Gallery in Richmond Virginia.  And this year I was given the opportunity to curate it.  As a jeweler I thought of the exhibitions that have inspired me in the past.  I wanted to create a show that displayed my particular interests in jewelry and other new work that I find exciting.  I also wanted to take this chance to exhibit the work of other young jewelers, most of whom are making these exceptional pieces within the first decade of their professional careers.  These are the ones who inspire me and challenge me to keep working in the studio.  These are some of the artists that I feel add interesting new ideas to the larger art jewelry dialog.  I chose the theme of biologically influenced jewelry, the lifeblood of my own work and the narrative that attracts me to certain pieces. From this theme came Organ/ism, a collection of eight jewelers exploring the biological world around us.  Jillian Moore was one of the first artists that came to mind.  Jillian’s work has always appeared to me like animals that have evolved through an alternate reality.  Their existence is imagined into being, and inspired by the creatures that you think couldn’t possibly exist.   They are often presented like taxonomical displays or snapshots of them in mid-autopsy.  This format doesn’t try to provide more answers; rather it adds another layer to the mythology of the creature. Hilary Pfeifer’s work offers a similar interpretation of the biological world, presented “somewhere between humor and curiosity”. Her diminutive and charismatic pieces swarm on gallery walls, displaying the multitude of living adaptations.  Her installations of brooches or necklaces can be like looking through a microscope into a thriving Petri dish, one colonized by single cell cartoons.  These masses of form offer a greater understanding of the individuals, and like Jillian’s work, add an additional layer to a complicated story.

Masumi Kataoka’s work comfortably walks a line between beautiful and disturbing.  Her organ forms, made from actual organs (hog gut and leather), are like a miniature trip to the displays of medical curiosities at the Mutter Museum.  They provoke a curiosity in me that always wants to see what is coming up next.  She has said that her inspiration came from Japanese idioms that express where emotions reside.  This is also expressed in English, when an emotion is felt in your gut or in your heart.

Our shared interest in attraction versus repulsion is an underlying theme of this show.  As you can imagine it would be when jewelers work with dismembered body parts.  Märta Mattsson’s jewelry exemplifies this dichotomy.  She presents wearable objects made from what some people fear the most, insects.  Their electroformed and lacquered bodies are encrusted with cubic zirconias, presenting a glamorous version of what is essentially a dissected insect.  This allows you to confront what it is you find attractive or disturbing about the creature. Masako Onodera also thrives on this theme.  Jewelry emerges from the body like additional appendages from the chest or neck.  Materials like leather, felt and skin-toned found objects make this connection all the more realistic.  Masako’s jewelry addresses the human connection to the living world and our part in its story.

Organ/ism is addressed in a more personal matter with Satomi Kawai’s jewelry.  Her interest lies in the biological rhythm of the female body, the way this connects to culture and more specifically, her own childhood. Materials like wool, cotton and silk relate to Satomi’s own family history, while cellular imagery and bodily forms relate to a larger family.  One shaped by evolution.  Emily Watson approaches this theme from yet another direction.  Her work associates the anatomy and geography of the human race.  The work shows how we are both part of the biological world and manipulators of the environment we live in.

I was nervous as a first time curator about the way everything would come together.  Not just if everyone would agree to participate or if we would be able to meet all the deadlines.  I was concerned with viewers making the same connections that I have made, or alternatively, have I simplified an idea so much that I am beating a dead horse?  Although even that might work well with this theme. »

mais … faut pas se faire de cheveux dans la vie !! ici, on est à un poil du bijou ….. si ce ne sont pas des bijoux au poil !! ;-)

Au-delà du dégoût que peut susciter l’emploi d’un tel matériau (à la « grande époque » du bijou en cheveux, à l’époque Victorienne, mode lancée par la très romantique Reine Victoria, cet engouement eu un grand succès dans les pays anglo-saxons mais suscita du dégoût et un certain rejet en France et dans le reste de l’Europe), ce n’est pas étonnant, à mon sens, qu’il suscite tant d’attrait parmi la jeune génération de bijoutiers : à force d’interroger le rapport du bijou au corps, le corps s’incorpore petit à petit au bijou lui-même.

« Contemporary art is getting hairy Long and silky; short and curly. Blond, brunette, red or grey. It’s hair and it has an important part in our perceptions of ourselves. It defines gender and visual identity, and is playing an important role lately in art — in jewelry, drawings or in mixed media pieces. Hair has long had a role in the work of artists and artisans. In the Victorian era, creating jewelry from hair became almost as popular as knitting or crocheting.  By using one’s own hair or that of a beloved family member women were able to design bracelets, chains, rings and earrings. Apart from jewelry, mourners would weave hair into decorative, memorial wall hangings. By the early 1900s using hair fell out of fashion. During the past 15 years, however, there’s been a fascination among contemporary artists using skin, nail clippings, urine and hair to create various forms of art. Fascinated with Victorian hair jewelry, artist and jewelry designer Melanie Bilenker has revived the art form. Like the Victorians who kept lockets of hair and miniature portraits painted with ground hair and pigment to secure the memory of a lost love, renders the « quiet minutes, the mundane, the domestic, the ordinary moments » from her own tresses. Bilenker observes various daily activities such as cleaning, bathing, dressing, resting or eating. She chronicles the private moments by setting the camera’s timer and goes about her business which can be anything such as eating chocolate, writing a note or enjoying a Saturday morning breakfast. Once she has the photographed images, Bilenker creates tracings of the forms within ghem with thousands of tiny strands of her own hair – which are eventually fixed in resin.  She meticulously layers several different drawings to give the appearance of depth, one as foreground, another as background.  The entire process takes the course of about a week of laying hairs, mixing resin, and then allowing it to cure.  Says Bilenker, « Once the hairs are set as line drawings within resin, I shape, smooth and polish the exterior.  I then fabricate the jewelry findings and set them.  The piece is then complete. »" (Courtesy Melanie Bilenker and Sienna Gallery)

« Puisant dans la tradition des bijoux en cheveux, matériau depuis longtemps collecté dans des foires et marchés ou dans l’intimité des familles pour devenir parure, Ana Goalabré se joue de cet usage en coupant une de ses mèches et en y taillant une bague qu’elle envoie à un homme accompagnée de la missive «J’aimerais tant passer mes doigts dans tes cheveux». Cette phrase, appel érotique d’un corps d’artiste, devient le titre d’une série déclinant divers contenus aimants et sensuels, traditionnellement gardés jusqu’alors implicites au nom d’une morale et d’une bienséance rigoureuse et qui tout à coup semblent avoir gagné le droit de dire clairement le désir, qu’il s’agisse de celui d’une mère, d’un père, d’une amante, d’un amant… et ce dans toute sa trivialité. Pourtant, il n’y a aucune charge obscène dans ces bagues. Qu’elles soient très travaillées ou reprennent le mouvement naturel d’une mèche de cheveux, elles nous renvoient à nos jeux tactiles dans les cheveux de l’autre, en fixant le mouvement, image arrêtée puis détachée du corps pour n’en garder que la sensation. »

The obsession – losing them, collecting them, ordering them, measuring them and archiving them. The desire – to preserve these losses – It gives rise to “transcendieron”.  The discourse is not about beauty and it is not about sensuality, not even about cultural symbols that hair carries.  How much hair do you lose constantly, everyday ? How many pieces grow out of your body and die every moment ?  “The transcendents” are a homage to the moments when you lose your hair. Captured and immortalized in the fragility of the porcelain, they give perpetuity and freeze all their expressions in the moment of their detachment from the body. With a threading method, the artist uses horsehair as connectors. They show the lightness, energy and freedom, while demonstrating the real, natural movement of the hair. Together with the act of keeping and protecting the hair in a porcelain form, they are given another life that keeps them present through their absence.

« Noon Passama from Thailand graduated this year in jewellery design from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam. She is strikingly talented and professional in equal measure. As well as unique works, she designs and produces serial work and collections of fashion jewellery.
In this opening exhibition at Ra, she is showing a selection of her graduation work, supplemented by new pieces, as well as jewellery from her ‘Momento Mori’ and ‘Buttons’ collections. It is with great pride that I introduce such a promising young artist to the gallery !
