« What about the pearls and their necklaces? From symbol of wealth and opulence to symbol of sobriety, from fantastic jewelery, sensual and transgressive to model of bourgeois modesty, the pearls surround us in multiple scenarios and multiple senses.
Beside the quiet collar of the grandmothers, we have Louise Brooks’s or Emmanuelle’s, alongside the puritanical collar of the typical North American executive (the only permissible jewel in the almost masculine uniform), we have the excessive adornments of the rajas of India, not to mention the earring of the girl from Vermeer, or from a corsair turned into a virginal little girl’s earring.
The pearl is born, like Venus, from a shell, but we do not recognize in it the same erotic and libertarian appeal. The pearl was domesticated. It is today a symbol of purity, chastity and restraint and, let’s face it, boring!
Can contemporary jewelery claim as its own the “stone” wich seems so classic and conservative today? «  Marta Costa Reis, 2017  for Galeria Reverso

EXCHANGE-BIJOU 1 – Juan HARNIE – Aesthetical Injection(s)

everywhere in december !!! CELEBRITY ???…….

In 2016, he continues his experimentation with a new serie, « Aesthetical Injection » : Designing this collection Juan Harnie used medical materials to create attractive, floral looking jewellery. Juan has always seen beauty in materials that have little to no aesthetical value to others. These materials in particular are usually linked to unpleasant situations like hospitals and doctor visits, but now they are taken out of this context and made into uncanny pieces of jewellery.
Juan got his inspiration from flowers and plants, which always seem to please the eye of the beholder. Even when a plant or flower turns out to be hazardous, poisonous or possibly deadly, at first people will always attribute positive feelings towards seeing them. Contradictory, syringes that are designed to administer medicine and in fact heal people are met with fear, disgust and a general feeling of unease. Using these syringes in colourful, floral pieces of jewellery, mimicking the shape and colour of the ever-so-loved flower, might just make people reconsider their initial feelings towards syringes and see the beauty the designer saw in them.
In addition to the syringes, sterile medical gauze is used either to imprint the silver backs of the pieces or being drenched in coloured polyurethane and moulded into organic sculptured shapes sprouting silverwork and gemstones. This medical gauze once again fulfils its original purpose: being worn on the body and thus soothing an inner ache. »

Triple Parade exhibitions in Tianjin & Beijing Exhibition / 10 Nov 2016 - 17 Jan 2017 - Tianjin Shengxi Museum of Fine Arts & Gauguin Gallery Beijing

The main exhibition TRIPLE PARADE 2016 -  Dialogue Across You and Me to Them: Creator, Wearer, Viewer  – Central Traveling Exhibition Represented 110 jewellery designers & artists from 14 countries.

The Triple Parade 2016 international annual exhibition is a cultural exchange which is expanded between China and the rest of the world on a multitude of level, devoted to the hardcore awakening in jewellery design, with a very open and contemporary-oriented approach by focusing on the concept of dialoguing.

The pervious themes were: Triple Parade 2015 – Dialogue across Three Countries, Triple Parade 2014 – Dialogue across Three Generations. This year, the term Dialogue across You and Me to Them: Creator, Wearer, Viewer in our theme is vitally important marks the notion of social interaction. We believe that the significance and multiple capacities of the dialogue mark have not been truly recognized. Each of the three roles in a dialogue, which are briefly introduced in the plate sections devoted to them, addresses one perspective on how  » Dialogue » plays a progressive position in the contemporary jewellery design of our period. Jewellery examines how we define self, integration and segregation, the means used for communication – and how these issues are reflected in creative work.

» TRIPLE PARADE 2016 will open its door at 10th NOV in Tianjin in China, it embraced the aspirations in a great ambition, setting up an intensive program consisting of exhibitions, publication, workshops, forum, lecture, which included dialogues with international collaboration partners from Netherlands, United States, United Kingdom, China, Denmark, Spain. The exhibition represented an enormous challenge to everyone involved in purely quantitative terms: with over 260 works by more than a hundred designers and artists from 14 countries. 11 experts from 8 countries have been exclusively invited to be in Tianjin as speaker on the Design Forum. The publication consists of 7 groups of interviews, including 14 experts on board, giving perspectives from education, collecting, creating, curating, wearing, and dealing on contemporary jewellery design. I am confident that it will open up new perspectives on the giant, and I would like to invite all the visitors to discover the greatly relevant designs from a field so full of surprises, with such a future ahead of it. » Jie Sun (founder of Triple Parade)

EXCHANGE-BIJOU 1 – Juan HARNIE – des bijoux qui ont du PIQUANT !

Juan HARNIE

« Juan Harnie is a 23-year old jewellery designer/maker from Hasselt, Belgium. He studied architectural and interior arts in Brussels but the scale of the things he had to design troubled him. He liked to work on a small scale and where the smallest detail had a big influence on the piece. This is why he studied jewellery design at the MAD-faculty in Hasselt, Belgium where he could do his bachelors and masters degree. The use of materials, which aren’t normally associated with jewellery, is what fascinates him most. »

One of the Juan Harnie brooches from 2016 begins with this title ‘Still Scar(r)ed? – Forget Me Not‘ : Oooh NO ! will not forget ! I discovered the work of Juan Harnie with these spiky pins, from the Scar(r)ed serie, and immediatly loved it !

« In his project Scar(r)ed’ (2015), Juan Harnie investigates how medical materials, deformities and scar tissue can be used in jewellery even though many people associate them with negative experiences and fear. As an outcome of this research he created a collection of brooches and necklaces made of latex and a variety of medical materials such as syringes, gauze and stainless steel basins. This unusual choice of materials and the technique of surgical stitching creates very decorative, yet uncanny pieces »

ENJOIA’T is not just a prize, and you will not find just jewellery. ENJOIA’T is much more than all this, since it is also a celebration of creativity, an indispensable meeting point for professionals in the sector, and a platform from which to show the public your creative project. In fact, ENJOIA’T rewards originality, technical quality, conceptual richness and transgression in the field of jewellery making so much as to question its own limits.

Lauren Kalman

Congrats to all the artists who made the SCHMUCK 2016 list, on show at the Handwerksmesse  during #munichjewelleryweek  24/02–1/03/2016

While our western countries discuss a lot, in a « social » point of view, about veil, tchador & so on,  fashion (Gaultier, Margiela, Hussein Chalayan, etc etc … ) & jewelry designers show their own interpretation about it …  finally, « only » an adornment ?

“I create wearable jewelry that investigates contexts relating to sex, gender, power, pleasure, pain, taste and beauty. This project originated in response to the architect Adolf Loos’s 1910 lecture Ornament and Crime, criticizing the use of decoration in utilitarian objects. My jewelry, when on the body, enacts Loos’s ‘crimes’ of individualism, eroticism, and ornamentation.” Lauren Kalman

«  Lauren Kalman  focuses on the creation, documentation, and display of wearable sculpture, electronic adornments, photographs, video, and performance. Diseases like elephantiasis, acne, cancer, and herpes are presented as jeweled infections, fabric growths, or wearable instruments. They are hybrids of the grotesque or undesirable aspects of the body and objects we associate with beauty, status, health or wealth. »

Enjoia’t Awards 2015 Award / 08 Oct 2015 - El 8 de octubre, a las 20h. en la Fábrica MORITZ (Ronda Sant Antoni 39, Barcelona).:

ENJOIA’T, Prize for Contemporary Jewellery Making, is a unique event within the sector, which has been rewarding the most outstanding proposals within the field of jewellery making for professionals as well as students.
However, ENJOIA’T is not just a prize, and you will find not just jewellery.

The Second Phase:
The Awards – The jury will meet the semi-finalists in the Arts Santa Monica building on Thursday, October 8th, 2015. Each piece must be worn ( by the participant or someone else), and the participant will have 5 minutes to present it and defend it before the jury. Besides the technical and innovative aspects of the piece, the originality of the presentation/defence will be evaluated.
Thus, the participant may utilize the elements he or she thinks convenient to help in the presentation.

This exhibition will ask viewers and participants to examine the idea of a garnish made by 2 different subsets of makers who have come together to create an embellishment that satisfies both.

Statement from the organizers:
A modern metalsmith/metal artist can be found working in traditional metals as well as in nontraditional materials. The designs can range from the classic to the extravagant, and the techniques can either be centuries old or decidedly current. The wide range of expression preferences, design options, materials, and processes has lead within our field to unfavorable misconceptions, misunderstandings and in some cases even outright disdain between artists. Each side considers itself superior to the other, seemingly not appreciating the clear advantages, benefits, and experiences each faction brings to the table. Quoting from Damian Skinner’s 2013 SNAG keynote lecture in Toronto:
“We are all family. Sometimes, family members don’t speak with each other, but we still are one big family. Let’s recognize this fact.”
Can our field overcome family division and send a much-needed signal to the metals + jewelry community? We appreciate and respect our historical past and acknowledge that current materials have a rightful place in jewelry/object making. Arriving at this message is the goal of this exhibition.”  – Brigitte Martin and Rachel Timmins
