Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

« Extension, prolongation, parasites of the body, these jewels are a hymn of our material lives, between power, social identity and belief charge. These jewels are made of an association of popular image, highlighting the relationship with the body . Two oilcans as balls are an association of a wood nodule and the oilcan shape, connected by a wire they hang directly between the legs as a soap or lubricating boxes.«

Claire Baloge (FR) -  Camel dung, gold leaf, silk (collier en crottes de chameau … j’adore !!)

I have chosen to use camel dung, because  it’s shape and color. Although the use of camel dung in jewelry may provoke it also links: in those (not so) far-away countries, many people are still using these animals, and their excrement, in daily life, while some others, a few miles away , are smoking the cigars of the oil business. I have chosen to use gold because gold is the referential measurement on which the whole world economy is founded. It remains a major symbol for jewelry, almost everywhere around the world. While camels are traditionally emblems of the noble class, in the nomad society, a clear mark of wealth and importance. It seems to be two different temporalities, which are still sharing the same space, coexisting in the same territories.(Claire Balogeexpo ‘I care a lot’)

Jill Baker Gower – ode grinçant à la « féminité »

Classé dans : COUP DE COEUR,Gal. Facere (US),Jill BAKER GOWER (US),USA — bijoucontemporain @ 0:05

Masters of Fine Arts, Jewelry/Metals – MFA exhibition - 2006
(ASU- Arizona State University-School of Art)

au début ça commence « bien », « classique » je dirais … et puis, petit à petit, un humour grinçant s’immisce, et ça dégénère ……… et ça devient délectable ! :-)

« My work revolves around how women of today are influenced by society’s concept of “ideal beauty” as portrayed by the media.  Advertisements, commercials, stores, magazines, and television shows aim to make women believe that by using or wearing certain products they will come closer to “physical perfection”.  The jewelry and metalwork I create helps the wearer become closer to this ideal beauty, but also points to the humor in contemporary American society’s definition of perfection.  The objects I make often contain prosthetics or embellishments that can be applied to or worn on the body such as make-up or fingernails.  By turning make-up containers into wearable objects, the wearer is able to conveniently yet obsessively look in the mirror, reapply lipstick, blush, or powder numerous times in a day.  The burden of wearing such large or uncomfortable objects on one’s body parallels the onerous practice of reaching physical perfection.
Certain people may be persuaded that in order to reach a particular status or to be accepted and considered beautiful by society, they need outrageous and at times physically painful surgeries, prosthetics, and injections.  Under select circumstances, sadly, this may be true.  Objects such as silver and gold teeth, fake eyelashes, and Botox compacts comment on these more invasive practices.  There are a multitude of contemporary advertisements for teeth veneers, eyelash enhancers, and facial injections that make people believe these prosthetics and procedures are vital life necessities.
Historically and currently, just as physical beauty can show or determine a person’s social status and power, so can jewelry.  Gold, jewels, and pearls can sometimes show a person’s wealth and status.  In order to signify that the pieces are valuable and precious, I use mediums such as silver, gold, pearls, and lustrous fabrics. By the use of these materials my pieces reference historical metalwork, specifically silver toiletry and make-up items.   Although my jewelry has humorous undertones and is not always practical and functional, it maintains its beauty and value, a quality that many women deem important in life. » (Jill Baker Gower)

« The three ages of life were presented by three pieces of jewellery: three different rings with a stone.
Childhood: A huge, oversized ring made of fabric invites the young to touch it. It’s soft and pillowy, something to play with. For an adult the ring is the size of a bangle and could be worn thus.
Middle age: A great rock crystal shows us luxuriance and vitality. This ring stands for prime of life. The zircon below the rock crystal makes the sparkle and glamour more intensive.
Ageing: At the end there is just the frame left. The skeleton of a ring symbolises the momentariness of our lives and all things. » (Sabine Lang (DE))

« In the Spice Series neckpieces, I work with whole spices, including cardamom pods, fennel seeds, and saffron. I am constantly surprised and inspired by the completeness and innate elegance of these small natural forms and try to highlight them effortlessly with the clean lines of silver and glass. These pieces blur the lines between studio, kitchen, and laboratory.  » (Sarah Hood)

‘POOR’ JEWELRY – designBOOM

poor gallery

The struggle of precious with non-precious materials is typical of recent years and has prepared a new way for ‘young contemporary jewelry’. Neither preciousness nor eternal preservation seems to be important to this new breed of arty accessories – with its value lying in its communicative potential. Within the young international jewelry scene, the new arrangement of everyday materials is a sovereign one and provides pieces with a lively expression. in the middle of the 20th century, a large part of society consisted of middle class people, conservative. In their taste and whose ideals were very strong and deeply-rooted, a society little inclined to change its lifestyle or its symbols. Jewelry was often viewed as an emblematic gesture, a sound investment that could be passed down through generations. There was, however, another part of society ready for renovation. Industry and fashion have changed the approach to jewelry by removing its symbolic and ancestral value. In a society, where great importance is given to superficiality, jewelry has been deprived of any cultural value thus limiting its understanding and consequently its distribution. In this context, the pioneers of the contemporary scene, albeit with some difficulty, had a fertile ground to work on.

does it represent what it did in the recent past?
When economy is stagnant, it is obvious that contemporary jewelry is faced with a very difficult challenge. It seems to be a restricted matter, among a rather small group of people and moves in a limited market, for many reasons including the fact that it does not shift a large sums of money. However, it seems the role of jewelry nowadays is not determined by whether the field is restricted, but whether the designers will be able to maintain and develop this specific sector. Often people do not understand why something so minimal and simple, made from materials such as used material, silicone, plastic, glass, and paper, should be so ‘expensive’. For most people, ‘contemporary’ and ‘the use of poor materials’ is equivalent to economic.

so what makes some things valuable and others not?
These contemporary accessories are made of innovation and artistic research. A piece of jewelry is not merely a decorative ornament; it usually has a meaning, which might be a celebration of something, or a loss, it might be very personal, but these meanings can also be universal, recognizable in today’s society. The rigorous monumentality of ‘poor jewelry’ comes alive when it is worn, when the tactile pleasure of the alternative materials comes into play. In the research of innovative materials, the here featured artists’ work is characterized by an empirical approach – solutions are found by direct experimentation.
