In an age of globalization when artists travel to numerous places, how relevant is their nationality in an artistic context?
What do we mean when we talk about Portuguese, Mexican and Brazilian contemporary art in the 21st century’?
What do we mean when we say that jewelry can identify a people and a culture?
What do we mean when we talk about Portuguese, Mexican and Brazilian contemporary art in the 21st century’?
Why do we mean when we say that a people and a culture can be identified by their jewelry?
Could it nowadays only identify an epoch?
// question the cultural identity and heritage of participating artists
// display works without showing the artists’ names and nationalities
// look at the way jewelry manufacturing undergoes changes and is affected by other materials and techniques
// reflect on concepts of identity and the way our past surfaces in the present
// foster a debate on the response of the public and reveal the artists’ names and nationalities when the event closes
Draw up the themes that PIN elected to embody the Twenty-Three. Contemporary Jewelry in the Ibero-America exhibition to promote a reflection on contemporary manufacturing that will make us re-think the cultural heritage of each artist and the relations this establishes.
Each of the 23 areas that make up the exhibition plan where the pieces are displayed represents a member nation of UCCI – Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities.
The artists’ names and nationalities are not displayed in order that their cultural identity and heritage can be probed and questioned.
The public is invited to seek the origin of each group of artists and interact in loco by trying to discover their nationality – and leave a flag sticker at each area.

Silent Architectures by Xavier Monclús

Opening: Wednesday, 1st June from 19:30 hours

Silent Architectures by Xavier Monclús Exhibition / 01Jun2016 - 23Jun2016 Klimt02 Gallery Barcelona, Spain .:

For his first solo exhibition at the gallery, Monclús will showcase a group of 17 new works. Silent Architectures confirm the evolution we’ve been sensing for the last four years: a shift towards simplicity and abstraction.

Xavier Monclús Brooch: Welcome house, 2016 Silver and enamel painting 55 x 30 x 12 mm: Xavier Monclús Brooch: Welcome house, 2016 Silver and enamel painting 55 x 30 x 12 mm:

Architectural fables
In order to define the work of Xavier Monclús, complex in its apparent simplicity, all we could come up with is an oxymoron: his work is based on what we might call a cultured ingenuity. The pieces shown here recall the delicate illustrations of the noucentista Pere Torné Esquius, immersing us in a world of sweet, domestic and welcoming serenity. Yet the schematic sense, awareness of volumes and cut of the profiles in these pieces (as if defined by an implacable light) evoke the outlook of the modern architects of the GATCPAC on rediscovering Mediterranean architecture in Ibiza, Xavier Monclús being familiar with its Menorcan variant.
Scale is essential when it comes to understanding these pieces. Are they large jewels or small houses? Plastic objects and animals are incorporated, disorienting us still further. Tubes, conduits and handles turn them into intriguing machines, announcing a movement, an action… a story. Textures are also very important, rough surfaces serving as a counterpoint to the smooth cleanness of the quaint technique.
These latest pieces by Xavier Monclús confirm the evolution we’ve been sensing for the last four years: a shift towards simplicity and abstraction. This refinement of forms does not exclude their figurative essence, sense of irony and the characteristic poetics of Monclús. In this respect, we have the impression that he has revisited or been reunited with the pieces produced at the start of his career, during his time at the Massana School in the 1990s, a period synonymous with enthusiasm for the development of jewellery as an independent artistic language. Simplicity, joy, skill and sensitivity join forces to raise a smile. The world of Xavier Monclús is one of fables and ingenuity, drawn and embodied in modestly precious objects, taking us back to the possibility of happiness, of reconciliation with our feelings and dreams.   / Alex Mitrani, Fine Art Curator

Preziosa Young is an international contest for young jewellery makers (under the age of 35). Preziosa Young has been organized by Le Arti Orafe Jewellery School & Academy in Florence since 2008. The competition does not have a predetermined theme. The artists for the exhibition are selected for their individual research and for the originality of their creations. In 2015 for the competition applied 120 artists from all over the world. The person responsible for the selection of artists for the exhibition was Prof. Maria Cristina Bergesio – curator of Young Preziosa, jewellery historian from Florence (Italy). For this year’s edition of contest she has chosen the following artists: Deok Sang Han (Republic of Korea), Jie Sun (Republic of China), Soyeon Lee (Republic of Korea), Tithi Kutchamuch (Thailand), Daniela Hedman (Sweden).

ArteArtesania

VALENCIA … MELTING POINT – SCHMUCK 2012 in Valencia (Spain) but not only… – 4 avril-7 mai 2012

Classé dans : Anne WIEDAU (DE),Espagne (ES),Exposition/Exhibition,SCHMUCK / MJW (DE) — bijoucontemporain @ 22:23

VALENCIA … melting point 2012

In May, Schmuck 2012 in Valencia (Spain) … but not only ….

This academic year 2011-2012, the Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny de València is celebrating the first ten years of the creation of the Department of Jewellery, independent of tha fact that the study of this discipline with its various subjects and workshops has existed for a much longer time. To mark this anniversary we have organised an ambitious programme of activities, exhibitions and talks on contemporary jewellery giving it the name MELTING POINT 2012. Joieria Contemporània València. For one week the EASD de València and indeed the whole city will be the focal point in the south of Europe for artists, designers, specialists, collectors, academics, and the general public with an interest in the field.
We are extremely grateful to all those persons and institutions wich have believed in this project and have chosen to collaborate with us. It is as well a project closely related to an event, Schmuck 2012, wich can well be called a dream made reality. Schmuck is visiting Spain for the very first time and we have succeeded in making Valencia the city wich will receive what is without a doubt the most prestigious exhibition of contemporary jewellery in Europe, wich can be viewed for two months in the MuVIM.
We believe that this discipline, as yet underestimated and with so much yet to be done in terms of development and consolidation in Spain, will benefit hugely gaining a more fully deserved recognition of the possibilities which jewellery offers as a language of the plastic arts, as well as in the area of study plans.
This celebration is clearly not without its revindication. We are asking that the different educational bodies raise the level of the study of jewellery to a parallel level as that enjoyed in other countries of a similar cultural and economic background as ours. Only thus will our professionals not need to accept inferior conditions within the European market and will we be able to erradicate the evident comparative slur. We have the human resources as well as the programmes. Now we only need the conviction and the political will. We wish to extend this revindication to the other artistic departments of Photography, Applied Arts, and Audiovisual Media. It is incomprehensible that in 2012 these fields still have not received this level of study and preparation.
For all these reasons we wish to invite you to come and acquaint yourselves with the work of so many international jewellers of both sexes who will be meeting in vlc over these days; to discover the techniques and the expressive potential of contemporary jewellery; in short, to enjoy its multiple languages. And above all, we wish to share the experience with you.

EXPO ‘Xavier Monclús: The Penguins of Amsterdam’- Galerie Rob Koudijs, Amsterdam (NL) – 28 Mai-2 Juil. 2011

Xavier Monclús : The Penguins of Amsterdam

Spanish visual art is various: beside distinguished monumental work, we may find absurdist and light-footed elements. Striking examples of this are Dali’s surrealism and the cartoon-like shapes of Mariscal. In the jewellery world Xavier Monclús is the number-one exponent of this free approach. In addition, he uses his medium to criticize the way in which we treat our world, and each other.
Xavier Monclus’s jewellery consists of collages bearing icons borrowed from the realms of children, advertising and comic-strip iconography. Not only does he make collages in a visual sense, but often literally too – his pieces include printed matter and all kinds of objets trouvés. On his previous visit to Amsterdam Monclús, among other things, acquired material for the title-piece Penguins of Amsterdam. In this, as in many cases, he uses animals as a catalyst; this brooch provides a good example of his work: Monclús contrives to conjure up images that are as alluring as they are impalpable. Precious Thoughts / Pensieri preziosi

Innovation, colour and energy: jewellery from Escola Massana of Barcelona

EXPO pensieri Preziosi

The fifth edition of “Precious Thoughts” presents by the works of seven internationally famous artists the Spanish contemporary jewellery developed at the Massana School of Barcelona.
After the important exhibition, “Artistic Jewellery – Padua and its Jewellery School” and last year’s review,“The Jewellery of Nature”, presenting Dorothea Prühl and the German School at Halle, with “La llibertat de la Joia” the same cultural path is continued to present the contemporary art of jewellery to the residents.
This is a cultural event of great importance carried on by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Padova as Italy has not yet developed a proper culture of contemporarity and artistic jewellery is an expressive form still little known and appreciated

La llibertat de la Joia” is presenting Massana School of Barcelona which thanks to its principles favours the growth of free personalities, fully mature and vivacious artists who work autonomously and completely independently to the extent that it is not possible to speak of a true Catalan style. However, there are many aspects which allow us to see a solid background and an identity in common in the jewellery-makers who attended the School: a marked tendency towards innovation, a conceptual search and the use of metaphor, a great freshness and energy, the tendency towards beauty through the use of colour, the mingling of different materials and objects trouvés, the frequent choice of assembly or construction techniques; the deep convinction that a piece of jewellery is one of the most particular, personal and fantastic ways of sharing one’s thoughts and feelings with the outside world.
