All that matters ………. at As gallery - Agapi Smpokou Contemporary Jewellery and Art

opening on Thursday 6/7/2017 at 20.00

AS GALLERY- Agapi Smpokou contemporary jewellery and art is presenting the solo painting and jewellery exhibition of the artists Yiota Vogli, entitled « all that matters ». The exhibition’s opening is on July 6, 2017 at 20:00 at AS Gallery, Psaromiligkon 9 in the center of Heraklion.

all that matters…. painting & jewellery by Yiota Vogli
« I have drawn photographic portraits that capture an expression on human bodies, which seem to represent not just the subject’s personality but include manifestoes of our contemporary society.
This body of work is an exploration into the physical and emotional limits of individuals operating in contemporary society, using the human images, to expose psychological and physical states like joy, despair, guilty, emotional release, gravity, presence and absence. The question concerning female faith and generally the virtuous behavior which supposedly characterizes women in every area of their lives emerges as a central subject.
The female body becomes means and subject of emotional communication, when at the same time it turns into a canvas on which expresses the individual and public freedom, while reflects the aesthetic value of our times. »

Yiota Vogli Visual Arts - All that Matters - solo exhib. juillet 2017Yiota Vogli - « Body Graffiti »- mixed media, 140x90cm
« The emblematic photographs of the surrealist Man Ray (1890-1976) are the artist’s raw material, the basic building blocks of these works. Thereafter the artist intervenes either by the use of the digital ‘touching up’ of the photographs or through means solely afforded by painting, such as the addition of colour or the subtly nuanced repetition of the same subject, thus emphatically underlining invented symbolic features of the image. The cumulative function of memory and associations leads to the inclusion of other apparently disparate elements such as street graffiti, Byzantine images and Renaissance art or even fragments from ancient texts. The resultant new work has thus the form of a palimpsest, not just in terms of its images but also in the representation of feelings. »  Despina Tsougianni  PhD. History of Art

»(MujerCountry)

In an age of globalization when artists travel to numerous places, how relevant is their nationality in an artistic context?
What do we mean when we talk about Portuguese, Mexican and Brazilian contemporary art in the 21st century’?
What do we mean when we say that jewelry can identify a people and a culture?
What do we mean when we talk about Portuguese, Mexican and Brazilian contemporary art in the 21st century’?
Why do we mean when we say that a people and a culture can be identified by their jewelry?
Could it nowadays only identify an epoch?
// question the cultural identity and heritage of participating artists
// display works without showing the artists’ names and nationalities
// look at the way jewelry manufacturing undergoes changes and is affected by other materials and techniques
// reflect on concepts of identity and the way our past surfaces in the present
// foster a debate on the response of the public and reveal the artists’ names and nationalities when the event closes
Draw up the themes that PIN elected to embody the Twenty-Three. Contemporary Jewelry in the Ibero-America exhibition to promote a reflection on contemporary manufacturing that will make us re-think the cultural heritage of each artist and the relations this establishes.
Each of the 23 areas that make up the exhibition plan where the pieces are displayed represents a member nation of UCCI – Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities.
The artists’ names and nationalities are not displayed in order that their cultural identity and heritage can be probed and questioned.
The public is invited to seek the origin of each group of artists and interact in loco by trying to discover their nationality – and leave a flag sticker at each area.

« As a visual artist, my relationship with jewelry is bidirectional. My jewelry is influenced from my artistic research. Observation and painting require the engagement of all of our senses, thus, in my work I draw on memory and therefore on my senses.
Addressing jewelry as micro sculpture, I refer to form, material, colors and texture to conceptualize personal memories and my view of social and cultural issues into art. »

Yiota Vogli’s interview

26-04-2017
Where is your inspiration coming from?
It’s very important to stay mind open. I seek inspiration everywhere; the ideas are always out there. It’s about being in the right state of mind to take the ‘half formed pictures’ and turn them into something that works.
What are you trying to communicate in particular with your artwork?
Making art is a self expression but most is a way to communicate and share ideas or emotions.
Which material you prefer to use and why ?
It depends of the idea I want to communicate! I love working with simple non precious materials like paper or paper pulp combined with metals like silver or oxidized brass.
How much value do you give to researching material for your creations?
Is very important to make a research of the materials you use in every project, to experiment up to the limits of them.
Is it more important for you the process, or the final artwork itself?
Both, but I am enjoying the process a lot! Every piece is a challenge.
Is there an artist you prefer and why ?
There are many, I prefer those works which are simple, brief, concise and direct.
Have you ever thought to collaborate with other artists , or you like to work on your own?
Making art is a lonely procedure, but Yes! I would love the opportunity to collaborate with other artists.
Where do you feel you are at with this last collection?
As an artist I transfer onto my work pictures, stimuli and sentiments.
What have you discovered of yourself, are you satisfied ? Looking deeper inside me… I feel that I am in a good direction!
Two words to describe your last artwork collection.
Unconscious thoughts.

ARTIST STATEMENT
The extraordinary power of objects is obtained because people believe in them. The more mundane the objects are, the more powerful they become. My practice contextualizes the embodied energy that is submerged beneath the layers of vintage leather gloves. The fragments of ordinary gloves convey a tactile and erotic interaction, emphasizing the physical movements between certain parts of body and garments. When the body is absent, the empty, internal structure retains evidence of human existence. It remains full of authentic spirit and fantasy.
Through the processes of deconstructing and reconstructing materials into symbolic forms, I uncover the intimate and sensual power of humanity. The individual records and stories from the gloves turn into something that is universally relatable. Yet, it loops back to the idea of private at the same time. When the broad concept of primitive and elemental human desire meets the audience or wearer, it encourages them to find his or her own sensations and conclusions of desire. It is a moment when ordinary objects become surreal and uncanny in order to redeem the socially constructed expectations and perceptions.

ARKIVET (the Archive) is a group of Norwegian artists consisting of Putte H. Dal, Hilde Dramstad, Elsie-Ann Hochlin, Camilla Luihn and Heidi Sand.
As jewelry artists they each have their artistic distinction. What they have in common is that they like to apply a theme based and conceptual approach to their craft. Since their debut as a group in 2014 they have had numerous exhibitions both in Norway and abroad.
ARKIVET sets out to investigate, through their individual works, different angles on how jewelry may work as a medium to promote dialogue in society today. Projects are developed through discussion and research with a common wish to bring jewelry as an artistic expression into contemporary society. As an example ideological, socialist, capitalist or ecological values may be analysed and processed through jewelry to artistic expression that fosters reflection.
The jewelry materials, artistic idiom and narrative content discusses concepts in the context of sitespecific exhibition design. For each project ARKIVET reaches out to interdisciplinary collaborators such as musicians, writers and philosophers, and ARKIVET also publishes annual publications.
In the WORTHLESS project the group wishes to explore how worth or value is perceived in today’s society. What makes something valuable? What is worthless? ARKIVET promotes a visual and mental association space for a discourse about the social and economic mechanisms that govern what is considered valuable. ARKIVET emphasizes the communicative aspects of jewelry and chooses to reveal something about human dignity, political aspects, self-esteem and the environment.
