C’est en 1992 que Noel Guyomarc’h, alors assistant dans une bijouterie montréalaise, expérimente le choc de sa première rencontre avec le bijou contemporain. Ce jour, la créatrice québécoise Barbara Stutman présente un bracelet composé de tubes en plastique et de fil d’argent. Profondément intrigué par cette pièce unique, il cesse alors de percevoir le bijou comme un simple ornement et réalise que ce dernier peut véhiculer un message, une réflexion, et proposer une approche nouvelle, tant esthétique que conceptuelle. Au cours des années suivantes, Noel Guyomarc’h approfondit ses recherches sur le sujet et rencontre de nombreux artistes. Il n’aura dès lors de cesse de questionner le bijou et la pratique même de la joaillerie contemporaine. Il ouvre sa galerie, entièrement dédiée au bijou contemporain, en 1996. Depuis plus de 20 ans maintenant, Noel Guyomarc’h agit comme commissaire, diffuseur, promoteur et conseiller. Son expérience et son goût lui valent d’être aujourd’hui reconnu comme l’un des principaux spécialistes de la discipline au Québec et à l’international. Il a organisé plus de 90 expositions, individuelles et collectives, parfois itinérantes. Régulièrement invité en tant que jury et conférencier, il est depuis quelques années évaluateur, entre autres, pour le musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal. De par un dialogue personnel, la promotion d’expositions ou encore l’expérience d’ateliers créatifs, Noel Guyomarc’h a su accompagner et pousser les artistes dans leurs reflexions tout en leur offrant une nouvelle visibilité, à la galerie tout d’abord mais aussi sur la scène internationale comme récemment à SOFA Chicago. Questionner le bijou comme objet d’art, l’ouvrir à de nouvelles inspirations, explorer de nouvelles voies de fabrication et d’interprétation, voici quelques unes des pistes que la galerie choisit de mettre en avant. Elle valorise ainsi des artistes qui proposent une esthétique originale et innovatrice, qui questionnent le bijou, son impact, sa relation au corps, les possibilités et limites des matériaux et des techniques, et qui, en un mot, cherchent à le réinventer. D’un petit espace dans un édifice culturel rue Sainte Catherine, la galerie s’est ensuite installée au 137 avenue Laurier ouest avant de déménager Boulevard St Laurent il y a 5 ans. Elle est aujourd’hui la seule galerie dédiée uniquement à la discipline du bijou contemporain au Canada. Le 25 novembre prochain, c’est avec fierté et émotion que la galerie Noel Guyomarc’h célèbrera ses vingt années d’existence.  Une exposition anniversaire « 20/20/20 : 20 ans, 20 artistes canadiens, 20 artistes internationaux » présentera à cette occasion les travaux de plusieurs artistes avec lesquels Noel Guyomarc’h travaille régulièrement depuis des années : 20 créateurs de bijoux canadiens et 20 créateurs étrangers qui, tous, ont répondu présent à l’invitation. Ils présenteront de nouvelles pièces, spécifiquement créées pour l’exposition. Témoignage à la fois de la richesse de cette pratique artistique et de la tache colossale accomplie par Noël Guyomarc’h au cours de ces 20 dernières années, l’exposition mettra en scène des artistes reconnus internationalement comme l’espagnol Ramon Puig Cuyas, l’américaine Rebecca Hannon ou encore le canadien Paul McClure, récent récipiendaire du prestigieux Prix Saidye Bronfman, mais aussi de jeunes créateurs émergents (Gabrielle Desmarais, Silvie Altschuler, Anne-Marie Rébillard…) pour qui l’appui de Noel Guyomarc’h a été décisif.

The SCHMUCK is an international exhibition that has been taking place in Munich for more than 50 years. It combines works of established artists and promising newcomers in the area of contemporary jewellery design and is the meeting place for collectors, jewellery lovers and museum curators from Germany and abroad. Organized as a worldwide contest, the works are chosen by an internationally renowned curator each year, this time by Eva Eisler, professor at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (AAAD). “Presenting works at the SCHMUCK is an honor for any jewellery designer“, says Dieter Dohr, Management Board Chairman of the GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH. That is also why this time, more than 600 gold smiths and jewellery designers from Germany and abroad applied for the special show. In spring 2015, contributions by 63 artists from 21 countries will finally be on display. This time, Karel Novak from the Czech Republic will be honored as the classic of modern art. Highlight of the SCHMUCK will be the awarding of the Herbert-Hofmann-prizes on Saturday, 14 March 2015 at 5 pm on stage in hall B1. On this day, a jury will select the three best works of the SCHMUCK. Each year, a number of accompanying events group around the special show at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich galleries, museums and cultural institutes.

Aspects of sustainability in jewelry and textile art

Featuring the work of 5 Textile designers and 5 Jewelery designers who work in an artisanal and sustainable way.

Quality needs time. This was the motto of the Slow Food movement that started more than 25 years ago as a conceptual alternative to fast food and all its negative concomitant effects. The Slowcraft show, which will be presented at the Design Center Stuttgart as part of its In()sights exhibition series, will be focused around the same concept. What the curators Martina Dempf and René Lang intend is to inspire is a new appreciation for artistic manual work. Those who create high-quality and sustainable products by themselves have to engage in the time-consuming development and crafting processes, which also include developing appropriate concepts and ideas and choosing suitable materials, as well as the artists’ devotion to the objects they produce. Before an artist or designer can even think about creating something, they need an abundance of creativity, expert knowledge, experience and long years of practice. Showcasing the creations of ten selected designers from the textile and jewelry genres, the Slowcraft exhibition will present high-quality and sustainable solutions as food for thought to delight the public.

The dynamic, technologically inspired brooches of Ramon Puig Cuyàs, Professor at the famous Escola Massana in Barcelona, catch the eye with architectural elements and a striking use of colour.
Silvia Walz also teaches at the Massana school. Her imaginative and smilingly colourful enamel bangles are bursting with energy and joie de vivre.
Mirjam Hiller makes jewellery out of sheet stainless steel or copper, which is sawn, folded and bent into shape to form little art works that are unique. The artist herself: « The piece of jewellery must be irresistible to the eye. It must hold me spellbound and touch my senses. Unique, exotic and beautiful, it should awake one’s curiosity and yet still be a little familiar. »
As the Japanese jewellery artist Kaori Juzu lives and works in Denmark, her creations are influenced by two quite different cultures. Her many-coloured « enamel jewellery treasures » tell stories of mysterious and unknown worlds.
In the golden jewellery objects of the German artist Alexandra Brachtendorf the gilding is done on a ground of rough forged iron, creating lively surface structures that are rich in shine and shadow.

Hélène Aziza’s gallery will participate to the « Circuits Bijoux » in Paris w/ an exhibition titled “Beyond precious” presenting jewellery that challenges traditional notions of preciousness.

 

Le mot «bijou» évoque immédiatement une notion de «précieux», de matériaux nobles, de valeur (monétaire).

Egalement, s’associe au mot bijou la notion de «portable». Or, il s’agit ici de montrer comment des créateurs réussissent à donner une nouvelle définition du précieux, en transformant des matériaux récupérés, en utilisant des matériaux «pauvres», ou en associant éléments précieux et non précieux, mais toujours de manière iconoclaste.

The Beauty Chase – Parcours esthétiques du bijou contemporain. Ce n’est pas Un diamant gros comme le Ritz qui rend fantastique le bijou contemporain, mais la capacité de l’artiste à créer des mondes imaginaires avec les matériaux les plus divers. Le doute et l’innovation, la recherche et l’idée sont au centre du bijou contemporain, il n’y a pas de chemin tracé à suivre. Dans le parcours de la création, le caractère précieux tient donc plus au projet et au travail qu’au matériau “brut” utilisé. Papier, bois, plastique, or ou titane, tissu ou verre : la matière choisie est déjà un mode d’expression esthétique avec l’envie d’être “autre”. C’est justement là l’aspect « fantastique » du bijou contemporain : l’envie de travestissement et de transformation qui le rend surprenant. Le plastique ne semble plus en être, la résine devient bois, l’or se transforme en se mêlant au tissu, au plexiglass, au pigment, le verre révèle sa transparence là où et quand l’artiste le veut. Très développé en Europe du Nord, peu connu par le grand public en France où la tradition de la haute joaillerie éclipse, peut être, tout le reste, le bijou contemporain expérimente, ose, provoque, crée avec des résultats poétiques, irrévérencieux ou ironiques, spectaculaires voire féériques. Et, si on veut emprunter les mots de Tzvetan Todorov, en sa présence: “on accepte le surnaturel”.

« At first there is a thought, a very vivid, three-dimensional thought of a form, a room that I can go into. I explore it and let it enchant me. I would like to grasp and experience it over and over again. The form is very complex, built of different colours, structures shapes and scents and depending from where I look, everything changes.
I have to make decisions, reduce it to the essentials and find a way for a logical realization in order to give the construct of my thoughts, which is by no means logical, a place in this world of tangible things. I focus myself on one kind of material, one or two colours; everything else distracts me and redirects my thoughts. I capture the three-dimensional form that spreads out in front of my inner eye, unfold it to the second dimension, sketch it and cut it out with the awareness that every cut is a final one. The cut out drawing lies in front of me, one flat piece, my unfolded thought. I bend and fold it to the third dimension. I’m excited to see if it really grows the way that I’ve imagined.
